Hi I have a 1985 carrera Targa and sometimes it struggles to go into 2 nd gear can anyone help

Hi Graham Could be 2nd Synchronizer or the Dog teeth on 2nd gear this will need a gearbox out strip down to find the fault, poss cost £1200. First check the clutch free play as to much gives poor gear change, but the 915 box needs care on changing gear, It will never be slik like todays cars. Charles

As Charles has mentioned already, that could the be the cause. However, it could also be that the bushes underneath your gear lever are worn out, and those of the gear linkage are gone as well. Replacing those (£ approximately 10 + VAT+ labour), correctly setting up the gear linkage and possibly changing gearbox oil (try swepco 201 gearbox oil- it doesn't "cure" a knackered gearbox but it does make it shift nicer after a good 50 miles, to get from various sources such as Bert Gear from Berlyn Services [link=http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/]http://www.partsforporsche.co.uk/ @ £65 + VAT+delivery + labour [/link] )would be MY first port of call. Try to find a mechanic who has set up a gear linkage correctly as it can be a rotten job if you have to figure it out from scratch. If you are experienced, it is less than 7 minutes. Good luck, Bert

I had similar problems with mine pepe, as Bert says change the nylon bushes first. One is a cup bush and is located at the bottom of the shifter lever where it connects to the shift rod. The other one is circular and the shifter rod glides through it. You could also change the nylon in the shift coupler as well. Check the tip on the shift rod mine had come loose and needed to be tack welded once I had that sorted changed the bushes and installed a wevo coupler the difference was night and day. Economical to sort out the linkage first, before you start throwin cash at a gear box rebuild, as the cars are old this will need done any way.

Thanks for that..I will keep you updated when I get this done...at the moment the car is in for part restoration

Thanks for that I will keep you updated when I get the car back from ..part resoration...new wings etc
