Gearboxes.??

Now then folks...

Am i correct in assuming that a 250bhp turbo gearbox is stronger than an S2 box.???
If so what is stronger about it.?? Ie where abouts in the box is the "strength"...

Also i believe that the turbo has stronger driveshafts.. What makes them stronger.?? Better uj,s?? or something else.??

I do know the turbo box has a higher final drive ratio...
IF i wanted to put one into a S2 what would i have to change to get the correct ratio,s, ie which "cogs" ???

I Hope somebody in the know can help me out.??

Without investigation I can't comment on individual ratios beyond what you already know, but the 1st and 2nd gears are hardened on a 250 Turbo 'box. It also has a cooler (a finned pipe) and the drive shafts are a bigger diameter; I want to say 25mm rather than 23mm, but I could be mistaken.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Hi Dave,

According to my Drivers manual, the ratios for the first 4 gears are identical.

5th gear actually has a higher ratio on the S2 (0.778:1) compared with 0.829:1 on the Turbo.

However the Turbo box has a higher final drive of 3.375: compared with 3.875: for the S2. This makes the entire Turbo box a higher ratio (for example, at 6000 rpm in 2nd gear the Turbo is at 62mph, the S2 is at 55mph)

That's perfect then; with the S2 final drive it would have standard S2 ratios keeping the track gearing as it was last season with a higher 5th for cruising.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

my S2 has got a 250 turbo box... i think the biggest thing it gives you is the LSD.... and ist a bit quiter at motorway cruising speed

Lali
Are you sure youve got a 250 turbo box.??
Im sure i asked Kevin + he said he,d only fitted a LSD to your S2 box..,, But then again i could be mistaken....

So what does the final drive consist of + is it easy to swap out of the S2 + into the Turbo box....

Can LSD's be fitted to non-LSD boxes? I've seen a couple of companies that offer LSD's for 944 so is it a cost effective mod or are you best trying to source a complete box?

Scott
The reason for my initial ???
Ive just picked up a 250 turbo box with the illustrious LSD...
+ Im looking at putting the diff into my S2 ...

BUT then i though why not have the turbo box o/hauled + at the same time put the final drive ratios from the S2 into the turbo box....

Only snag is the box doesnt have a cooler . As its been removed...Thats why it was cheap....[;)][;)][;)][;)]

Dave,
I wasn't questioning the logic for you fitting your turbo gearbox to your S2 - I was just asking a general question. I have been suffering this winter with my lack of LSD and have added an LSD equipped gearbox to my ever growing mods list. But my gearbox is in such good condition I would hate to fit a knackered gearbox. Just fitting an LSD would mean that I get to keep my current gearbox which I know is a good one. The Quaiffe diffs are about $1500 which is considerably cheaper than the cost of buying a 250 turbo box (if you could ever find one) and having it overhauled (assuming it is knackered).

Are you sure the oil cooler been removed? I seem to remember that there were two types of LSD equipped boxes fitted to the turbo - one with an oil cooler and one without. '88 cars onwards had an oil cooler and LSD as standard, before that the LSD and oil cooler was an option on '86 and 87 boxes. This suggests to me you should be able to run the gearbox without the oil cooler. In fact it is probably only necessary if you are hammering the track.

Hammering at the track is the purpose of Dave's car though...[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]For all the cooler is, provided you have the connection points you could get one made up for under £100, maybe a lot less, given the costs a local braided hose/oil cooler/bike bits place I use has quoted to replace the engine one with something bigger and a thermostat.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

The cooler has defo been removed. There are open holes where its been....+ oil p*****g out[;)][;)] even though the oils been drained out....
Where did you get your price for a diff.??As a Quaife ATB[ torsen ] diff are £650 + vat....I asked at Autosport....

Fen your comment made me laugh...[:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

I cant wait for this season.....[;)][:D][;)][:D]

I got the price from an advert in one of the porsche mags - can't remember which one. But I like your price much better!

Dave,
Kevin put the 250 box on my car... I think his exact words were "if you think I'm going to responsible for putting that pile of sh1t back in your car you can f%K off and find some other *&^% to look after your car"....
I think he was trying to tell me that "the S2 box was past its best and that the cost of rebuilding the box to include the LSD wasnt really viable" he was just a little bit more colourful with his description...

Lali
Thats why i like Kevin....

He doesnt pull any punches AT all.....[;)][:D][;)][:D].. OR mince his words....

also wondering and thought id ask on this thread (soz)
