Gearchange problem advice please

Very recently my gearchange has stiffened up. Changing from 3 to 4 is like pushing the gearstick through treacle.
There is a slight graunching noise when changing with the engine off.
What do these symptoms describe?
Anyone had similar problems.

Mike

I would check the gear linkage first. Its possible that one of the plastic bushes is breaking up making the change stiff.

The places to check are the gear stick housing itself and the rear linkage. The rear one can be accessed by lifting up the rear floor carpet and removing the access panel held in by four or so screws.
