gearchange

[&:] I own a 944S2 Cabriolet 1990 and I would like to know if any members have a solution to difficult gear changes, especially from 1st to 2nd. Mine improves when warm but still requires some effort to change. I would also like to source an exhaust that sounds good.

The gearbox could be several things, the linkage and bushings are quite likely worn but sometimes just putting in fresh oil into the box is sufficient.

I have the ESS exhaust and I like it, it's noisier than standard but sounds nice and seems to help the engine rev faster.

I understand that 1st to 2nd is notorious for being difficult; due I think to the gearbox being at the rear.

Changing the gearbox oil certainly helped mine, but I tend to drive round the problem now, by pausing in neutral for a second before going into 2nd gear.

Thanks for the info. I will change the oil and see what happens. Any special grade recommended or is the standard ok ?
Where can I get the ESS exhaust you mention?

ESS's website is Essential Styling
Somewhere on the site there used to be videos of the exhausts running, but I can't find them now so he may have removed them.

Charles - A lot of people on here have recommended Swepco Gearbox Oil from Bert at Berlyn Services, although not used it myself. No gearbox oil reservoir, just a filler plug on top of the gear box and a drain plug on the bottom, can't remember the size of "Allen Key" to fit but someone on here will know. Word of CAUTION though - make sure you remove the filler plug first as this can seize. I have heard stories of people draining the gearbox oil first and then finding they cannot get the filler plug out. Good luck.

Just changed my gearbox oil for standard semi synthetic 75-90 and the gearbox is quieter, no improvement is
shift as is good anyway. I bulked at the £50.00 price for Swepco so paid £20.00 and decided to change it
twice as often.

Just thought I'd update this thread now I have the Redline in (75W90 NS - don't get the NS version if you have an LSD).

Well the shift action feels far better/smoother so I'm very impressed. It has quietened the transmission down a little bit too although not as much as I had originally hoped.

I got mine from Fluke Motorsport (http://www.fluke-motorsport.co.uk/). Their prices are good and their service has been superb.
