Gearknob removal advice

Has anyone got a good method for removing the gearknob from a 1984 3.2 (915 Box)? I've tried without success - bentley manual says you have to use a 15mm spanner & hit it with a hammer - perhaps i'm not hitting it hard enough (!), but don't want to damage anything, as I'm only trying to change the knob for an ally one and would prefer not to take whole assembly out of car!

You might want to be really carefull removing that gearnob as, surprisingly, it is no longer available from Porsche.

Those traders that do have new old stock or even a batch of remanufactured gearknobs are asking £89+ for it...

Take care,

Bert

They are a friction fit and can be quite stubborn to remove. The spanner method usually works, though you should add some protection by wrapping some masking tape around the jaws of the spanner.

Just bear in mind that the gear stick is in 2 parts, the shaft that the knob is attached to is a press fit at the lower
end into a short larger shaft which moves the linkage in the lever housing, (under the rubber glove), when I was knocking the knob of my SC these 2 parts parted company, welding didn't last very long and I ended up using some JB weld to re-join them.

So beware !!.
