I am after a new gearknob leather, seen this at design911 but at £185 it seems a lot!

Anyone know of a better price?

No reason, I've never got anything from Porscheshop. Anyway I just ordered one off ebay for £8.99!!! I will update how bad/good it is.[:)]

My local car trimmer replaced the worn leather with black suede leather for £80. It now matches my Momo steering wheel. Not the cheapest out there but I got what I wanted.

My car came with a Momo aluminium one that I have since removed and replaced with the old, worn, tatty original one as I felt the Momo was too tall and was too cold to touch in the winter (I'm a big wooss!) So I might stick that on eBay and then buy a new standard one, I will try and photograph it over the weekend. The previous owner seems to have covered the gear lever shaft with tape before fitting, which I have now removed, but because I don't have the original clip it tends to come off in my hand if I get over-excited![:)]

I just changed mine - got it from Porscheshop. Fits okay, but maybe a bit too loose a grip around the lower part of the shaft . Tight fit around the knob part though. (flippin 'eck, this sounds like a 70's porn flick). My advice, also check the inner rubber boot - if it's split, replace it. It makes a BIG difference to the 'centering' action of the gearstick. Got the boot from Porscheshop - about £16 IIRC. I also changed the nylon bearing shell (only £1.58 from Reading Porsche OPC) - this has made a BIG BIG difference to the precise feel of gear selection. MY gear selection feels almost like new.

Well my £8 boot arraived this morning, 2 days from the 'buy it now' being pressed on ebay. It came with instructions but I've done this on one of my old 944's so knew the score. The leather is not as thick as the Porsche one so might not last another 20 years. But this makes it a little easy to fit under the top number insert. The final fit and look is as good as the Porsche one, so very happy with it. How do Porscheshop get away with £30 and Design911 £185!!! Sometimes ebay can be good.

If you use a little spray glue it will help.

Great to see something off e-bay being decent quality. I don't want to start a discussion on this, but can people please remember something. Companies who have enormous premises, a large number of qualified staff, charge VAT, have a long-standing business supporting the cars and are planning ahead to maintain parts supply etc. will HAVE to be more expensive than someone selling a few bits on e-bay. That doesn't make them a rip-off, in the same way that a book shop isn't ripping you off even though they're dearer than Amazon. Just a different business model and you have the choice of where to go. £185 seems pretty steep, though!

I agree partly about the cost of overheads etc, but I hope that companies that charge a lot more offer a lot better support. The issue is a lot of companies think because they are Porsche parts they can charge over the odds, this includes Porsche themselves. A mate needed new under tray bolts for his 993, from Porsche they were £8 each! The company I purchased the gaiter from must charge VAT as they are registered as a company on ebay, and I would guess have premises and a number of staff as they have sold over 72000 gear gaiters in less than 3 years! When you look at the items they have for sale a Ford gear gaiter costs the same as a Porsche one and that’s the difference because they don’t have ‘Porsche greed’.

To be registered as a business on fleabay you don't have to be VAT registered. Some short run products from Porsche will cost more to supply than lesser quality mass produced items from other sources. Very small spec differences at source can make a huge difference in final retail price. Porsche also have larger overheads on the whole than someone running a mail order business in a small industrial unit in the back of beyond. Many cheaper parts will work fine. Some things you will want to spend more to ensure quality or longevity. You pays your money, you take your choice!

This £185 quoted is somewhat misleading, it's not just for the gaiter, but for the whole gear stick. I tried to get one in Linen Leather from OPC a couple of years ago and was told they didn't do one and only supplied the stick and gaiter as one part and it was around 200 quid. Managed to get it from Prestige Parts - excellent quality/colour match and fit, plus they do an exchange and fit service(£48 total, so not cheap). Changing the stick over was a doddle, so worth bearing in mind as another option.

Well that makes more sense if you get the whole gear knob, then its not just a bit of leather stiched togather in the right shape for £185. Maybe I've just lived in Yorkshire to long and inherited the tight Yorkshire man attitude........

Chris I dont follow what you've done! They are a bit of a pain to make them neat then get the gear pattern top bit in, also can be a bit tight to get round the base plastic bit that clips to the car. I used spray glue to help the leather to be tight to the shaft [:-]. Have a drink and try tomorrow [:)]. As to the seat I think you can stick a allen key from the tool kit on the end of the motor through a whole in the plastic cover under the front of the seat and wind the seat back. I think I remember reading it in the hand book.
