gearlever movement

My 99 boxster has excessive movement from the gearlever when apllying the throttle.
When going from cruise to acceleration the lever jumps in a back and forth direction, about an inch. I suspect either the trans mount or engine mounts to be worn/failed, does anyone have such experiance with their cars?

A bit of movement is normal. The shift lever is connected to the transmission by very long cables that go up and over the engine and then down to the transmission. The engine/transmission moves a bit and so does the shift lever.

An inch is too much, way too much. First time I have seen this complaint. The engine mount on the early cars are known to fail, but usually you notice this because when you take a turn the engine vibrates against the body of the car. Might as well check the mount but I doubt if that is the problem unless the mount is completely gone.
