Gears when cold

Ive tried using the search box, but had no luck....

When my my2000 3.2s is cold, I have real trouble with the gear change. Ive had a look on google, and it seems a common problem which goes away after about 3-4 miles or so, but initially I have real trouble selecting 1st and 3rd gears as well as reverse.
Is there any solution to this or at least some way of making it a little better?

Its normally second gear that can be awkward to select when cold. Sounds like the linkage needs adjustment if first and third are giving problems.

I too have selection problem when cold with my 2000 3.2S, but only 1st.

Possibly a common fault with 2000 3.2S boxsters ??

Yes my 3.2 does it as well in 1st and 3rd when cold. More sluggish than anything major and it goes away completely after a few miles and doesn't happen at all when warm. What kind of linkage is used is it rods or cables? As it's a ten year old car I was wondering what would be the benefits, if it is cables, to take them off and oil them or renew them all together?

I bought my 986 in late November 2007 from an OPC with 25k miles. By the January I'd had enough of not being able to get into 2nd gear when it when it was cold until I'd driven 2-3 miles so took it back. Porsche Centre Swindon were brilliant and a new box was fitted under the warranty. Never had a problem since. If it's under warranty don't put up with it.

The cables can stretch or become damaged where the rigis section joins onto the flexible part. The cable on my own car snapped altogether and left me stranded in 2nd gear. Porsche sell a cheap setting tool called a lock bridge that sets the lever in the optimum position allowing you to remove the cables and re tension them. Part costs about 3 pounds and its a simple diy job. if this resetting and lubrication doesnt fix the issue then its likely to be the gearbox itself.
