GEARSELECTION - UPDATE

Just thought I'd update everyone;
The problem wasn't as Maurice suspected (a gearbox bearing race), it was in fact the diff that had let go but still drivable - Strasse at Leeds confirmed that the diff is a "common" problem ( see "993 gearbox" post).

Through my good furtune the diff bits have ended up in the gearbox and f*****d that as well!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the update, I wasn't aware that this was a common problem.. Do you plan to rebuild the gearbox or buy a
used gearbox ?.

Hi everyone,

sorry for the delay in responding - lots of other things (non porsche) going on at the moment.

The car has done 90,000 miles, it was a planet gear in the diff that failed initially ( we think) the bearings and races in the diff seemed OK.( I am technically challenged in these areas)

Your right Maurice bad choice of terminology/grammar gearbox/differential failure is not a common problem perse, (although looking at recent posts it is becoming more common as milages increase) it was the mode of failure ie diff not gearbox that was common (according to Strasse - a well respected indipendant in Leeds) he remembers doing a dozen or more in the last 2-3 years.

I assume these gearboxes last for more than 90,000 miles in a 500bhp V8, that being the case I must just be unlucky as I only have two hundred a seventy odd ............. if I'm lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!
