Gearshift bushes?

1983SC - thinking of making my gear change a bit sweeter - and the gear lever a little less 'rattly' on the over-run in second.

Has anyone changed their gear shift bushes?
Where did you get them and is there a kit available or do I need a shopping list?

Cheers,
Rich

I bought a kit from pelican parts (www.pelicanparts.com) in the states, they do a bush replacement kit $28 - it arrived in about 3 - 4 days and was fairly easy to fit.

They have got a guide on their web site of how to fit them as well.

It's well worth the money.

Lewis.

I changed the the following on my 82 SC:
bush at the bottom of the gear lever pivot
bush for the gear rod mount
gear lever spring plate and springs plastic guide plate
Plastic guide plate
I did the job 3-4 years ago and bought the bits from the Porscheshop. The parts cost about 50 quid and job took about an hour once I had mastered the springs. My car had similar problems to yours and I was considering fitting a short shift kit, but several people (including a couple of racers) said that fitting replacement parts would give better results. Apart from the 915 gear box being slightly agricultural in feel the repair worked great and I haven't given the short shift kit another thought.

Buy the bits from Porsche, they cost peanuts. I did the job last year, makes a huge difference. The 915 box is a wonderful shifter if it's in a good state. If you are changing the linkage between the shift rod and the gearbox (lift the rear carpet and take up the hatch at the rear of the transmission tunnel - check for play in that big link bush) then that is the dearest part. The moral is do the cheap ones first and see what you think. Adjusting the linkage/changing the bushes is detailed in 101 Projects.

So what you are really saying is the nut that holds the steering is the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Thanks for the input everyone. John - roughly how many peanuts did the parts cost you from Porsche?

Stand by Rich, will dig the receipts out later, think I might also have listed the prices in my running report.

Ahh - found it in your running report. £29ish including a few hinge pins and bits. Thanks for your help.

Have the receipt in front of me now -

Ball socket (bottom of gearlever) £3.08 each
Friction ring (on lever shaft) £5.84

Plus the dreaded but less PCGB 10%

Just getting round to changing the gearshift bushes. It's amazing how a fast approaching deadline like Le Mans gets one into the garage to do all those small jobs.

I plan to tackle it tomorrow and will probably doo what I usually do and cast the Haynes to one side and get stuck in...

Quick question - I've pulled up the rubber boot at the base of the gear lever. This exposes two nuts holding down the spring plate. Do I need to remove the centre console in order to expose the bolts holding the whole assembly in? Or is it a case of unscrewing the 'pivot pins' which the lever sits acrossto get down to where the ball socket bush is? I'm guessing the whole assembly needs to come out.

Take the centre console out Rich as it all needs to come apart. Easy job, though make sure you get the bush at the bottom of the lever on nice and tight or it will pop off in a few days and the whole lot will have to come apart again. As Bones says, ask me how I know [8|]

There's a good procedure available on Pelican for adjusting the shift coupler when your new bushes are sorted.

...And I guess a long magnetized screwdriver may come in handy for any dropped nuts (fnarr fnarr).

Cheers,
Rich

Puberty not a requirement for 911 ownership mate, I know a few little boys who bought themselves a petrol-powered Porsche when they should have stuck to the pedalled variety a bit longer, so if the nuts don't drop over the weekend then don't worry about it too much....one day lol [8D]
