Gen 1 from 2.7 to 3.4

Also interested in what average mpg people get in the 3.4S. I'm getting an average of 27.2 in my 2.7 according to the computer.

Hi,

Has anyone here upgraded from a Gen1 2.7 to a Gen1 3.4S ?

I just wondered what people thought of the differences? I would hope that the extra grunt was really noticeable? Plus how does the 6 speed box compare to the std 5 speed in practical terms?

As always, I'm just pondering what my next car would be, and wondered if this upgrade would be worthwhile, or maybe look at 997's?

Cheers,
Matt

i got avreage 25or so in my s 6 spd gearbox and grunt a big difference i test drove both extensively which is why i went for the s version no regrets-apart from selling it[]

All 27 - 28 average consumption. If you boot it all the time it will obviously use more. 6 speed gearbox is excellent. The road Tax is the one to watch. This is a big jump @ £495 Trevor

Not unless you purchase a pre March 2006 car [:)]

Thanks folks, I noticed that little tax "loophole" if you can find an early registered example [8D] I reckon I'll take an S for a spin and see how it feels. Not much difference mpg-wise (not that I'm too bothered about that anyway).

I find that the worst effect on my fuel economy is usually traffic otherwise I can make 26-27mpg and if gentle on the pedal as much as 30, but the latter is rare.

Matt, The consumption on my Gen2 Cayman S stays consistently around 28mph. The only time it gets zero'd is at the 2-yearly services (~6k miles) and includes mainly fast A/B-road and limited motorway and track day runnning. Jeff

This discussion on Porsches and what mpg they do reminded me of my mother-in-law's comments when she heard we were buying a Macan. "How many miles per gallon will it do?" My reply was short; "That's the wrong question!" [&o] David

Thanks for all the info folks, much appreciated. Trevor, it has to be pre-April 2006 to get the cheaper tax,so a 55 plate I believe.

A point to note regarding economy is the effect of having the optional larger wheels, I work in emissions testing and like for like cars with different wheels have differing drag factors. This was demonstrated last year when 4 Gen 1 Caymans ( 2 Caymans, 2 Cayman S's ) did the trip to Stuttgart the guy from Leicester and I took our S's by the smae route and at similar speeds for the most part, his having 18" wheels while mine has 19", Fuel economy recorded through the trip was 27.5 MPG on his ( 18" ) and 27 MPG on mine ( 19" ) the 19" can be expected to have less rolling resistance due to lower sidewalls and more rigid structure but they are wider which will raise the drag from both friction and aerodynamics. This is born out when I look at the Road Load Data charts for some of the performance cars we test.
