Gen 2 Diesel Software Update

An issue has been brought to my attention in respect to a recall "AKBO”, which is currently in progress.
The recall includes an update to improve start-stop functionality.
It appears the (non-reversible) upgrade now engages the engine auto stop-start capability in Sport and Sport plus modes (previously inhibited) as well as normal mode. Although no mention is made in the supporting information, the upgrade appears to remove previous functionality for the driver to deselect auto stop-start when the engine is operating. i.e. Auto stop-start is now permanently engaged in all modes at all times (subject to satisfying the preconditions for engine auto stop-start).
This would take away the ability for the driver to consciously deselect auto stop-start where road conditions and circumstances could mean activation of auto stop-start could be detrimental to good driving practice (e.g. very heavy congestion/queues , proactive slowing at junction approaches in anticipation of filtering into lanes etc.)

Have other diesel owners (Gen 2 and late Gen 1) had this recall carried out ?
What are your experiences/thoughts post the upgrade ?

Any feedback would be appreciated

I am making an assumption that this may also affect Cayenne/Macan diesel owners too so your feedback welcome also.

My Panamera diesel is going in for the blower replacement recall in next few days and there was no mention of this on the phone. I’ll be asking for this software update NOT to be done if I can’t turn the auto stop/start off! Thanks for the information.

Clive,
Thanks, that’s interesting - have you seen the stop start now applying in the sport etc modes post-upgrade as outlined above ?

i wonder why the fundamental logic on ability to override would now be different between models /engines ?

The ABKO upgrade on my Panamera V8 Diesel has taken away my selection of stop/start functionality from all driving modes. Very frustrating in city driving and I am sure detrimental to the electrical system and starter motor. Would appreciate any feedback on how to retrieve this functionality

Rod

If I select the modes; Sport or Sport+ it automatically disengages the stop/start function. Is this an option for you short term?

Unfortunately no David, there is no way to turn off the autostop mechanism in any driving mode. Moreover they have disabled the exhaust note functionality. I am wondering if there if a butterfly valve or some other physical mechanism that can be adjusted so I can hear the V8?

There are vacuum operated valves on each exhaust tip. If you get on your hands and knees you’ll see them at the back of the car. Pull the vacuum pipe off and the valve will open (if it’s not rusted closed - not a great design and they have been replaced with electrical actuators on later cars).
Remember to plug the hose with a golf tee or similar.
Sport plus should do that for you. it doesn’t affect emissions so I can’t see why it’s been disabled.

Thanks Stringbag, Ill check it out when I can get it up on a hoist. On my 2017 model, I have to take a valance off. Appreciate if anyone knows if is there a way of defeating the "ABKO" update on Panamera V8 Diesel, specifically the stop/start functionality which is now on in all driving modes, irrespective of the mode selected. Thanks Rod

I was wondering the same thing, on my 4S V8 I usually try and do the dab the brake pedal twice and the engine will keep running, failing that you can put the gearbox into neutral and the engine keeps running. It is a complete PITN in slow traffic

This update was carried out on a service without my consent. So p****d off. How are they legally able to remove a factory option, change the driving characteristics of a car that is sold from the show room with this factory option. Its like driving a car with fueling issues. when you crawl towards a roundabout or junction you can feel the car trying to cut out, if not already done so.
Wouldn't of been in this situation if they hadn't been involved with VW scandal.
