Gen 2 first thoughts

We have now all driven Gen 2; well most of us have [:)] But few have lived with the car. Here are a few differences I have noticed from my previous 997S (and Cayman S)

1. You cannot check the oil before the journey. That is not so good. It simply will not let you until the oil is warm and the engine is at idle. So you have to drive a few miles, then stop!

2. Now this is indeed great! I specced the USB option. I then transfered all my CDs (about 200!) to an 8 Gig memory stick and, lo and behold, they all came up on the PCM in the correct order, details and all! Naturally my Ipod works too, but a memory stick costs only a tenner.[:D]

3. The Bluetooth facilty will only read the phone sim card, not the phone memory. However, I transferred all my numbers to the sim card then all was fine.

4. So far I have not discovered how to put present position into the Sat Nav, then call it home. One can call any previous desitnation home, but the PCM still will not recognise full postcode, nor my street which was built 9 years ago. This is because it has not been adopted by the Council.

Watch this space for new revelations and some nice pics

Nice one Derek

point 1.. welcome to my world [;)] Turbo has always been the same... it(PCM) does however advise to to check the oil every so often
point 4... we can't really blame the sat nav people for a road that doesn't 'officially' excist can we [;)]
point 2 & 3... brilliant news [:)]

Now where these pictures [8D]

Re point 4 is it not royal mail or OS data that is used for addresses/base data?

I used digital maps daily and we get Annual updates of base data from OS

Can never see point of grossly expensive usually OOD built in sat nav in cars when state of the art inexpensive updateable systems can be stuck on windscreen (unless thats what you want to avoid)

True, my Garmin is a better sat nav in many ways (full post code, safety cameras), but I prefer the PCM in the Porsche because:

1. It is integrated.
2. Built in and this does not obscure windscreen and there are no wires.
3. Has more functions ie altitude
4. Better for resale (not that I am going to sell [:D] )
5. The audio is much better, especially for Bluetooth.

With reference to stand alone Sat Navs, at a recent conference an officer of the law was talking about the very same..
They are banned from use in his forces Police cars due to blocking the screen and safety concerns - and not just the falling in your lap ones [;)]

How long before this becomes the car haters next target to force through... they are already looking at laws regarding its use in HGV as it upsets the locals...
The information in the binnical of the 997 is very good and does negate having to look away at the screen

Think I read somewhere that screen mounted sat navs have already been banned in some states. Some people do actually put them in some pretty daft places.

Derek,

There is an option to store current location, so do this at home - or I think select 'go home' and then store beneath that.

I can't remember how I did it but it was fairly quick!!!

BTW - watch the oil, despite how you read it - I have added a litre already.

Car looks good - hope you enjoy it.

MEX99,

How many miles had you done when you checked the oil level? Have you Opened up the taps yet?[:D]

cheers

Thanks for that, I'll watch the oil.

Still trying to come to terms with the new PCM. The Jury is out.

Can't find how to view the destination on the map. Any ideas?

I had a quick look over the PCM in the TT at the Silverstone Classic, lovely new interface and the mapping images looked really easy on the eye..
I only quickly flicked through the buttons but looked very similar in operation to the last version.(mine [:(])

I check it every time I fill up so every 300 or so miles.

I have opened her up a little - truly awesome - acceleration is blistering.....

Having picked mine up Friday I have noticed that the oil pressure guage seems to spend most of its time between 2 and 3 bar - I have yet to take it over 4000 rpm and the handbook says at 5k it should show 3.5bar so does my reading sound within accepted levels ? My gen 1 always seemed to run nearer 4 most of the time.
Also it takes an age - well at least 20 miles to get the oil temp up to 90 - again normal on gen 2 ?

Interesting this. My Gen 2 (3.6) sat more or less at 2 bar at 2000 - 2500 rpm. It may be different to the Gen 1 because it has an 'on demand' oil system to reduce energy. Quote:

'To reduce power losses and increase efficiency, an electronically controlled oil pump supplies the lubricating points inside the engine as and when required. This means the oil pump does not work so hard when there is less demand for lubrication'

Same for me - shouldn't worry - focus on getting the oil pressure higher by accelerating harder!!!!

Thanks for your comments - I like the acceleration advice !

I have to say that what fusses me more is the new way the oil needs to be checked - just doesnt seem logical versus the old way.
Is there an optimum time to check it when warm - I say that as drove for 10 miles last night - checked on return -waited for 45 secs and then saw it was 2 blocks down whereas previously had been out for an hour to find it was 1 block down - bear in mind I have only covered 300 miles in all so can hardly have used much ?
