Gen 2 More Thoughts Revisited

My first post
I have a build slot reserved for March '09 delivery - an ideal combination for cash availability and the new 09 reg.
I'm starting to get excited and the various recent posts have helped me refine the spec for which I thank you all.
The basic spec is:
C4 Targa
Ruby Red (it's as near as I can get to the one that was nicked!)
PDK
Cruise
Sports Exhaust (if it's available)
etc etc

In light of the lack of universal acclaim for PCM 3.0 and basic stuff like the radio reception (and the fact that its very expensive!) has anybody considered not ticking any of those boxes and having something like the Kenwood DNX8220BT fitted?
It's got the lot (including GPS camera alerts), and looked really good in a brand new Boxster that my local car audio firm had just finished.
I am assured that there's no problems with warranty (although not checked that with my OPC).
Any thoughts?

Hello,

Specifically on the PCM vs Kenwood. I would not do this, aftermarket audio renders the warranty useless so you would be throwing away two years warranty basically at cost of just short of £3K so stick with the PCM! I know this doesn't fit with what you have been told so check it out by asking Porsche!

Also, as far as I am aware, the Boxster doesn't have PCM as standard whereas the 911 does making the PCM+Nav upgrade more expensive on a Boxster than a straight Nav module upgrade on a 911 (also massive difference in terms of % of cost price) - I'm not a Boxster expert and haven't compared the pricelists but this is what I have heard. That would make it more sense on a Boxster than a 911.

hi

Leave the third party audio alone. My new 997 gen 2 pcm is I.M.O flawless. Brilliant navigation never let me down yet, radio reception pefrect i listen to radio 2 and local radio mostly though. I also went for bose and ipod connection. It plays and sounds stunning and is very easy to use.

How can you say that when the system will still not accept a full postcode? Moreover, PCM2 will accept 22 Sunnycroft High Wycombe, but PCM 3 does not (you try it)? Additionally, one can now only put in 1 speed limit, not 3 as previously was the case. The new system is better in some ways as it is HD based, but the database still needs populating.

I'm told that sport exhaust will not arrive until May 09.

As for a Targa, I had a 996 Targa (very similar) and was disappointed with both handling (top heavy), poor rear view when roof open and also very noisy. Only available in C4 & C4S so it will be a heavy car.

hi derek, I did say i.m.o! its leaps and bounds better than my old mercecdes command. I also obviously dont do as many miles as you and use it less? Its always found where i want to go though. I fully understand the postcode debate but its fine with me and personally never made me a problem. cheers.

They have deprecated functionality that some undoubtedly favoured and in the case of postcodes I doubt that the map source (Navteq?) has done away with postcodes - one might ask did Porsche decide therefore that this was no longer a requirement?[&:]
Correct me if wrong but they haven't opened up the functionality (even if on a subscription basis) to POI information such as traffic camera data and speed limits - again if the map supplier has the data why not expose it?

Asked Porsche about updating the map database and UK "have not received any information about this so far."

I've been away and not been able to thank everybody for their comments. Thanks.
I'm seeing the OPC guy next week to organise test drives and will enquire about the warranty then. I'll let you know what they have to say.

Keith

Keith,

I'd avoid Ruby red - I have it and it is too nice to share with anyone else. In seriousness you may choose to paint to sample the colour you previously had on the 964 - may be £2500 well spent and form a nice connection??

That's a good thought about the paint match. Something else to throw into the renewed price negotiation!
Thanks
