When did these come out - 08 or 09?
Is there much difference between the 4 and 4S on the road?

Thanks

Announced July 2008, delivered from 2009.

The Targa 4S has a top speed of 185 mph and 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds, the Targa 4 is slightly lower.

Regards,

Clive

Thanks Clive.
My daily 944 turbo runs 300 and a bit bhp and my brief dalliance with a 996t ran 490.
So would a 4s feel desperately slower than the turbo do you think?

0-60 in 4.7 and top speed 185 doesn't sound "desperately slow" to me [:D]

Compared to a 997tts then I suppose it might !!

If you're looking for outright performance, I wouldn't be choosing a 4 or a Targa, personally.

No, not that. I found the 996 really impractical and a real bugbear was no access to the rear, hence the targa.
I wouldn't want a gen 1 car. But it would be a shame to spend that sort of money and deep down be a bit disappointed in the performance against my 2 points of reference.
I wouldn't expect the manic go of the turbo but I would want a noticeable step up from my 944.
Hence the question.
If they made a turbo targa that would be ideal!

I think it's going to be a difficult comparison.

Sounds like your 944T is modded substantially, as I seem to recall factory ones being about 250bhp? And about 1,300kg?

Outright performance - the 997 might be quicker (4.5s to 60, and just over 10s to 100)?

The shove of the turbo (in the lightish 944) will be hard to replicate in the Targa - as has been said it's one of the heavier 997s (at 1,600 kg vs. a C4S at 1,550kg and also a higher CofG due to the roof), and:

Targa 4: 345bhp at 6,500rpm & 390Nm at 4,400rpm
Targa 4S: 385bhp at 6,500 rpm & 420Nm at 4,400 rpm

On the other hand, the 997 will come across as pretty refined by comparison.

Couldn't speak for handing but would imagine you may have a very sharp and responsive setup on the 944, which probably won;t be the standard 'feel' to a targa.

The PDK will, however, be a good match to the targa, and give it little extra edge - especially if you have Sport Chrono.

I have a Targa 4S - certainly no slouch and the roof is fantastic - i like the rarity of it - think ive only seen one more 997 targa 4s since i got mine, it certainly isnt a track day car but a lovely mix between GT Car and Sports car , something which i plan to test on a trip down to Stuttgart and then Modena next summer .

the PDKis a great mix - i think a manual targa would be an odd mix .
