Hi there, anyone had a map update on a Gen II as with my old Boxster it was a new DVD. Also what cost ?

Are you sitting down? About £400 from a Porsche Centre for the map DVD and unit software upgrade if required!

and if i understand previous posts, if you update the maps yourself and you put the wrong disc in, you end up 'bricking' your PCM correct?

if only ten of us could chip in for the discs and legally copy them and distribute amongst the donaters[;)]

Not necessarily, I updated the software and installed later DVD myself. You do need to follow correct procedures however. I got help from another forum member, try search.

The 2009 PCM is a totally different update process; it is not a simple set of discs that were required for the 2005-2008 PCM 2.1 that is fitted to the 987 and 997 generation 1 cars.

The Navigation software is stored on a hard disc within the PCM unlike the DVD which is in the earlier model cars. That said the update is via a DVD. However, the update process requires an activation code supplied and entered by the dealer using a PIWIS computer and therefore cannot be done by the owner.

Yes, forgot it's changed to a hard drive. So it looks like those sneaky Porsche people have stopped us DIY'ers in our tracks, for now.[;)]

It wasn't so much the DIY'ers, it was the pirate copying of the map discs and the reseller 'ebay' market.

Yes, I'm using genuine mapping data disk, but purchased from someone who was upgrading to an even later version.

In other words OUCH!!!!!
They are taking the P when you consider the high level you can get from a TomTom and All in inc the Hardware its only £250 for a top end one.
Geeezz I like to have the inntegration in my car but thats the only upside now. In the early days of Sat Nav built in Mfr supplied System alltough exspensive would knock the socks off an aftermarket.
Think they need to wake up and realise if the charged lets say £60 most of us would grumble but do it but at £400 I doubt if 1% of owners would bother. Simple maths 1000 owners spending £60 = £60,000 or 50 or so spending £400 = £20,000
