German Road Trip

We are thinking about taking a driving tour through part of Germany next summer with the 944 and I was wondering if anyone here has done the same and if so if they have any tips/itineray suggestions etc they could offer ?
Obviously we want to see a decent amount of different locations but don't want to spend every day driving all day.

My wife has relatives not far from Cologne so we will probably start there and make our way down the Rhineland towards the Northern Black Forest (no doubt taking in the Porsche museum along the way !) and perhaps a bit further afield depending on what is practicable.

We will have two weeks for the tour and any suggestions as to what/how to plan would be gratefully received. [:)]

Can't help, but I'm watching this with interest as it's something I've contemplated in the past and 2016 may be the year to do it.

Oli.

If your going to the Black Forest then you must visit Triberg and Baden-Baden. I remember staying at the Best Western in Triberg and looking out of the hotel window on the 31st May 06 and it was snowing, lovely sight. Baden-Baden is where the England team stayed that year for the World Cup, again a nice place to look around. Also as you're traveling over why not stop in Luxembourg City?

We've done a Germany Tour for the last 3 years fitting it around the Porsche Festival in Dinslaken on May 1st.

There is so much to see in Germany, Luxembourg, France, Belgium and Holland on your way down and back.

WW1 and WW2 Memorials and towns (too many to name individually but here are a few places we have visited : Arnhem, Limburg, Remingen for the Bridge, Albert in France, Eagles Nest if you drive down to Bavaria with Austria and Salzburg not far away
Race Circuits : Reims, Nurburgring, Spa, Hockenheim
Mercedes and Porsche Museum and Factory visits
Black Forest for fantastic driving roads and picturesque villages

You could spend a month and still only scratch the surface [:)]

Friends of mine visited Triberg, Freudendstadt is lovely then take the L500 towards Baden Baden....
we've stayed at Hotel Heiligenstein in Neuer & from there went on to Salzburg where we even stayed at the Von Trapp family home.....

Enjoy, it's brilliant

Thanks for all the replies, we are currently looking through all the possibilities and planning our route - exciting stuff ! [:)]

The Black Forest Panoramic Road, known locally as the Schwarzwaldhochstraße, is Baden-Baden’s direct link to the wonderful world of the Black Forest. Starting in Baden-Baden, the road heads south towards the town of Freudenstadt, passing places of interest such as the Mummelsee mountain lake, and the peaks of the Schliffkopf, the Alexandraschanze and the Kniebis.

I drove over eight thousand miles in the "S" around Europe last year and it was great fun. Booking.com works a treat.

Cheers,

Well its just a month to go before we set off to Germany [:)] Going to pick up the car from Promax tomorrow where its been receiving some minor fettling and having its aircon brought back to life for the first time since I bought it (just in case we get some hot weather !)

Our first stop over will be at Verviers in the Ardennes (near Spa) and then onto Germany. Rather than tour constantly we are going to to base ourselves at various points for several days at a time and explore from there. Cochem, Freudenstadt, Rothenburg, Bad Godesburg and then a couple of days with my wifes relatives before heading home. Really looking forward to it. [:)]

I can suggest to visit a friend in Heppenheim who is pretty much into our cars : http://www.944er-teile.de/
We spent a lot of time in his worskhop working on ours and others' cars and you may enjoy seeing what he has.
We might even meet there if the timing is right, let me know what you are up to.
