Getting a reaction - Members Magazine

spiker

New member
I suspect this will possible annoy a few people

This is not my intention - just an observation - comments and feedback very welcome

I have received the club magazine for the past year and to be honest its a bit dull

I have a attended a couple of events and know they are quite interesting but the magazine just seems to be filled with pictures of Mr and Mrs Smith on their visit to some European location in their car

Now I dont mind this too much but it feels like most of the magazine content is as such - even the adverts at the back are more exciting than most of the content

Furthermore ( sorry mr secretary ) - Cayman news , other than the visit to Champagne country ( and incidentally I dislike the French - long story so wont be doing that) - there is never any content in the Cayman section , yet there appears so much in other models

What we need perhaps are more articles about people and their vehicles , projects they have done , more news about 'Caymans' , maybe even some competitions ( maybe ;)) - before you say 'what do you suggest spiker ? '

It just feels like it needs a makeover

My intention is to improve our magazine

I know where you are coming from but, on the other hand, I edit a magazine for another club and I would suggest that any club magazine is as good as the members'contributions. I assume from your post that you will be shortly be supplying a good, punchy, Cayman article to the editor of Porsche Post.

[:)] To paraphrase JFK, "Ask not what my club can do for me..etc etc"

Yes I knew you would say that - hence my suggestions Perhaps Mr Cayman secretary can get in touch and ask for something specific ?

Oi! Alan! You at the back there - wake up. You're needed here........[:)]

It's a nightmare for us to get content from members, yet the only content we can put in the PP is what we're sent. I ask for submissions regularly, but have only had one offer in about a year now ( the orange Lambo-doored 944 Cab). Anything is welcome. If you're not confident about writing something don't worry; it can easily be edited or re-written by the RS or publishers. A couple of decent photos, sent full-sized, are always good as well. Ownership experiences, trips, events (why can't we have the Club events from the member's perspective rather than the volunteers for a change?), work you've done on the car, unusual things like getting a bride and four bridesmaids in a Cayman for a wedding, that sort of thing. [:)] What's discouraged is too many repeats; there have been endless stories about taking a car to the 'Ring, for instance, with no extra interesting bits. Please, send in as much as possible as it's your magazine and it will publish what you submit.

Whilst I expect some stick will be given it's a good point and what the forum is about.. I actually quite enjoy the travels of other club members as it offers ideas for us to all do, I'm about to write an article myself but now worry/fear that it might upset some of the reading membership [;)] It is a 'Club' magazine after all. The Ppost editior is always asking for technical articles but to be fair from my point of view, unless it's on a model that you own I find them a waste of print and space- unless it's in the register column, so I guess we can't win in some ways. A frustration of being an RS is the lack of support that the membership offer, the enthusiasm eventually leaves you after so many events and a lack of support for them, even threads like this raise a glimmer of hope that some members are actually interested. garyw PS- I don't mind the French- but I'll scrap the idea of a Champagne tour and write up [;)] PPS - I feel I'm lucky to be involed in an active membership and register.

Spiker... No I dont take offence that easily... I would be grateful for any suitable contribution for inclusion in the Cayman column..but to let you know what I would want, would defeat the object in itself...as I Cayman owner I could write it myself? Whilst ther subject of projects was mentioned...again care must be taken in what is undertaken and published, in case of invalidating any warranty. For example a year of so ago I fitted grills to the intakes in the front valance to stop the induction of leaves etc... included the topic with pictures etc in the column.. but was later informed that some Porsche centres would invalidate any warranty! As Paul McNulty states...getting contributions is difficult at most times, and you can only ask so often. With regard to trips, I try and vary these from year to year, previously Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland , in order to provide the opportunity for all members wherever they are located. I tend to avoid going to a castle or country house for a picnic as a Register trip, as I feel a "tour" gives the opportunity to stretch the legs of of cars, rather than stare at them in a field. However, PCGB national events normally provide the more static meeting for networking and socialising for those members who wish it. My email address is Cayman@porscheclubgb.com and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Alan I am sure you worked hard to produce the grill article, but with all due respect, the fitting of intake grills has been done to death in the Boxster, 996 and 997 register area of the Forum and loads of Porsche related magazines. Although extremely useful it gets rather boring after reading a few articles about the same procedure. Who gives a stuff about being told that the Porsche warranty would be invalidated. We are all adults and can make our own choices and those with a warranty should know this already. Not all OPCs will reject the warranty on fitting grills, but it would be wise to check before going ahead. The PP editor, Stephen Mummery, must be sitting on loads of articles that are very much repetitive and there are only so many times you can publish about champagne runs to France. It’s frustrating for the person who submits the article doesn’t to get it published or waits to be published, but even more so for the editor if that all he’s got to play with. The best person to ask about the kind of article that PP needs to be refreshing would be to ask Stephen what he would like to see and if its something that bucks the trend then the chances of early publication will be increased.

Peter, You seem to have taken my reply totally out of context to the original post

I was simply highlighting to Spiker the problems with publishing "projects" on current porsches that may still be covered under warranty. I never said my "article" didnt get published! I dont care how many times other registers / regions have made a champagne run, but no doubt those who take part expect the trip to be reported on, after all it's not mandatory for all or any members to read it. Thanks for your help anyway.....
