Getting ready to buy my first Porsche

Hi everyone,

My first post here on the forum. I've dreamed of owning a 911 (996 shape) for a long time and have been saving the pennies for the day I could get one.

Well I'm nearly there and I'm now starting to look around a bit more seriously.

My dream car is a Dark Blue 996 around 1997-2000.

Regarding engine size..... some seem to be 3.4l, some 3.6l. Other than the extra 200cc can you explain the pro's/cons of one or the other?

What can I expect of 996 ownership? Performance, reliability, insurance, servicing, everyday practicality ....... you name it I want to know it, so look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks alot and hope to join you on the road soon.

Hi, I'm not sure if you can get to this area as a 'Guest' but the 996 Technical Articles section has a buyers guide and also tells you the difference between the two versions. The 996 with the 3.6 litre engine is called the facelift version and has a few other upgrades such as the Turbo type headlights etc.
If you are going to buy one then I'd advise joining the club and this will give you full access to lots of useful information for both purchasing and maintenance.
I'd personally advise getting any car you are going to purchase checked out by a specialist. I used Peter Morgan who was excellent.
Good luck with your car hunting.
