Glasgow travel advice

I would welcome some travel advice from any of you in Glasgow. I have friends staying overnight on Wednesday, and they are travelling from here (Fife) to Dunoon on the Thursday morning to go to a wedding. It only just occurred to me that the Empire Games will have started by then. Question ... any guesses on how bad it will be getting through Glasgow on the M8 mid morning? Is it worth them taking one of the horribly long detours? All advice gratefully accepted.

Thanks John H

A difficult one ...I would imagine the worst part is when they reach the out skirts around the east end of Glasgow and over the Kingston bridge area. The rest should be ok past the airport on to Greenock /Gourock route to the western ferry terminal .There are a lot of dedicated Games route only marked out .I would allow an extra hr to their journey time . No guarantees given or implied [;)]

I would use the M74 extension and skirt round the problem area.Or even run down the 74 and cut through East Kilbride and along the GSO that way they should miss out Glasgow and they can stop at Brian's for a cup of tea.

What time John Wednesday is opening ceremony so things will be in full flow though suspect M8 through Glasgow should be OK

I think they have sufficient time to go the long way via Invereray, so this might not be an issue. I'll find out more when they arrive. Thanks again folks

To be honest I don't think it'll be that bad - at the end of the day the M8 is the main arterial route through glasgow, they aren't going to block it in any significant way otherwise there very well may be a riot. If you were coming off into the east side of the city (why on earth would you do that anyway) then it might be an issue, but I can't really believe they will make the terrible M8 any worse.

As others have said, you'd probably be quicker in any case taking the new M74 extension....the only hiccup there is that they didn't plan for the volume of traffic coming along the M8 from the east who would want to do this and the exit from M8 onto M73 goes through a big roundabout which can be queued back a bit.

My preferred route would be to cross the Kincardine bridge and come down the M876/M80/M73 and come right down to the new M74 with no junctions/holdups guaranteed - nice new motorway for most of it.

In fact john, ignore all my advice, it seems in their better judgement they have decided to reduce these already congested roads even further - apparently both the M74 and M8 (both 2-lanes as it was) have been reduced to 1 lane for the public....absolute chaos will ensue.....I'd stay indoors until its all over!

Don't think games lanes that are on M8 will affect you if you come in over Kingston bridge more on expressway and off ramps and M74

Hi guys,

Anyone have any thoughts on using the Kincardine Bridge then heading for the Erskine Bridge and following the Greenock Road for the ferry or north for the scenic route ? This would miss out Glasgow completely.

Cheers,

Cameron
