My car has one key that does everything exept it doesnt fit the glove box. Is there a seperate key for this or has it been changed ???

My 944 (1984 Lux) has a seperate key, totally different shape / profile to the others so it looks as if your key has been lost.
Cheers,

An old 944 i sold a few years back had a smaller key with it but i cant remember if it fit the glovebox or not !! The reason i ask is i bought a full lock set today but forgot to get the one out of the glove box and wondered if its worth going back to get it.Also the bulb is missing out of the key ,can you replace just the bulb ??

Yep, the one key does all locks. I think your smaller key (which has a square hilt with Porsche enscribed along the diagonal) is for the original Porsche alloy wheel locking nut - of which i've got a fully functioning set but removed them as I was worried about the lock becoming siezed.

The other thing I've seen on earlier cars that had a second key aside the locking wheel nuts is an alarm system with a lock cylinder just behind the driver's door. My '86 Turbo had one.

My 1984 Lux has a key with a plain edge and a serrated one (similar to a Yale key) whereas the key that fits doors, ignition and petrol cap has a key that has both edges serrated. Did they possibly change to only having one key when they brought out the oval dash model?
Cheers,

According to the handbook (for the S2 at least) there are indeed 3 keys. The smaller double sided key is actually the same as the main key, but it is designed to fit neatly into your wallet for emergencies, while the Yale type key is for the wheel nuts. That's what I received when I bought my car. As for the bulb, I went into the OPC in Kendal to see if I could get a replacement, but they told me it was only available as a whole unit comprising of the plastic key head with button, battery and bulb - part no 944.538.041.00, £11.99 + VAT each.

I should have stated that the glove box key is as long as the ignition key as far as the part that actually inserts into the lock. Don't think mine was ever fitted with the locking wheel nuts so didn't have the small 'C' key as per the picture in George's posting.

Cheers,

One key should fit all the locks, and yes the key head bulb can be replaced if you are careful.
Anyone know what size/type of bulb fits?
I seem to recall reading some instructions somewhere about replacing the bulb with an untra-bright LED, and how to modify the insides of the key top to make it work. It was a document (rather than a post), but I can't remember where I saw it. Have a hunt 'round on some of the other forums (TIPEC etc) and see what you can see.

Probably from Rennlist:

Ohh, I JUST made my own yesterday! I got SICK and tired of trying to find a working battery & bulb combo, so I tried copying Czar's idea!
check it out:
1 $2 Ultra-Brite blue LED (3.9V)
2 $3 Varta 3.6v batteries in series!
1 washer (to bring the 2 batteries to the same thickness as the 1.5V Varta.
and a little bit of solder!
Plus, the process is completely reversible!

I'm happy to say the thing is as bright as a high powered flashlight! It's a bit overkill, but damn it cool!

It was on Titanic, someone posted it as an attachment. Looked like loads of effort to me when I read it - the solution above looks a bit more like I was expecting.

Ahh, i've been struggling to source the correct battery for the key, this mod looks like it could be just the ticket.
