Glue or Sticky Pads

Guest

New member
Hi,

I will shortly be fitting the 3rd Brake light to my car, (External rear screen type) the unit is secondhand but is complete except for the screen fixing, I believe the previous owner used sticky pads which is what I would prefer to use however these are not a Porsche item. My local OPC tried to sell me a fixing kit containing glue etc for £55.00[] I would be interested in what other members have used, I thought of the pads used to secure your rear view mirror to your front screen or number plate tape. Glue is far to permanent ![:'(]

Any other ideas welcomed

Pete,

The glass adhesive used, as you suggest, for the rear view mirror works quite well. I used a kit from Halfrauds for my 3rd brake light spoiler and it's still stuck fast nearly 2 years after the initial fix.

The kit I used had some squares of mesh fabric which you applied between the glass and the bracket. As long as you leave it a good 24 hours to set it should be fine.

Good luck.

Best regards

Dave

thanks dave but I would prefer the sticky pads tho.............glue and me just don't get on[]

Pete,

By all means try the sticky pads, but if your experience turns out the same as mine the spoiler will fall off following the first downpour. I tried all sorts - including industrial strength Velcro - and it just didn't work.

The thing that's difficult to appreciate is the amount of force that's brought to bear on that spoiler when the car is travelling at speed. The sticky pads will not hold the spoiler firmly enough and it will move enough in the air flow to allow water to creep in under the pads. That will gradually weaken the hold .... and it gets worse and worse. Mine took about 2 weeks to finally fall off. The glass glue has lasted 2 years so far with no problems at all. It's no coincidence that Porsche recommend the glass glue.

Regards

Dave

Dave,

Ok I'm convinced[;)] what was the name of the kit you used? I see you got it from Halfrauds[] (Must remember false beard, moustache & dark glasses before I go and purchase also park 993 out of sight[:D][:D])

Pete,

This is the one.

Regards

Dave
