Go Faster 944

Anyone know how to make an early 944 go any faster. I've tried stripes and a loud exhaust but they don't seem to have made any difference. I'm thinking of installing a V12 turbocharged marine diesel with nitrous oxide injection next and am wondering if anyone has tried this before ?
 
Remove weight.
If you want to go 'scary fast' try removing those heavy, heavy brake pads [:D]

Seriously there's not much to tune on an NA 944. It may work out better value for money to just buy a more powerful car (eg an S2 or Turbo).
 
My wife won't let me have another car and this one is remarkably rust free, or at least nothing serious so I am intending keeping it, it's just that its soooo slow !
 
There's not much you can do. If you had to keep the same car then you could install a supercharger or install a 3L S2 engine. Neither will be cheap and in the long run it would be better to simply buy an S2 or Turbo
 
Well you can install a V8 of course, but that would not be so cheap and require quite a few other incidentals being upgraded too.
Seriously, either just add lightness and live with the good corner speed, or do as the others have said and upgrade.

In the real world (and at legal speeds) there isn't much to choose between a Lux and a Turbo. The Turbo has the gunt to turn most cars into mirror specs - but not at legal speeds. The Lux is far more agile, cheaper to insure, and cheaper to run (it doesn't eat brakes/suspension/oil/and need ÂŁ1,000's in upgrades like a Turbo [8|]).
 
And an S2 is better still! [;)] No, I sometimes wish I had the power of the 250 turbo and none of the worry of the 16valve chains/ cams, slipper etc.

You could trade it in for a 924 turbo,[:D] 5 mph faster and a half a second to sixty. Less expensive tyres, just as economical, loads more fun as everyone thinks it will be a 924 lux.

137 and 7.5 to 60 isn't exactly pedestrian though is it? A good '85 944 that is remarkably rust free is a rare pleasure, and Jon is so right about the 944 turbo at legal speeds. My 924t feels as if it would be able to pull away from my 944t below seventy in fifth. Of course let it rip in second and that's a different matter. I wouldn't mind betting that for ultimate tractability the 944 s2 with 211 bhp would be the best choice.
 
S2 suffers from the same problem with respect to high end performance as the turbo. Recently I have been doing a fair amount of performance testing on my Saab 9-5 after I had to fiddle with the thing somewhat to fix why it was so pants on the 944 dyno day. Basically the characteristics are like this:

Saab 9-5 2.0 with BSR stage 2 30-70 mph is about 7 seconds, so pretty good for overtaking HGV's

Porsche 944 S2 with promax chip and decat is about 6 seconds, so slightly better for overtaking HGV's

On me local drag strip hill climb dual carriageway the Saab will get to roughly the same top speed as a friends 944 2.5 NA managed.

The 944 S2 and a friends 944 turbo will both reach warp speed. To put into perspective the S2 hits the same max speed as the Saab manages on that hill about 1/2 way up!

Now one might assume from all that, that the Saab is pretty average but last week an Alfa 156 GTA tried to outdrag me up the same hill, same speeds, and pulled out about 1/2 a cars length the whole way up. This means that an S2 or a 951 would have walked away from the Alfa and a NA would have given him a good run. The 944 NA is in no ways slow.

The flipside of all this is that when I put me foot down at 40 mph in the Saab it actually feels faster then the S2 because of the turbo boost. In real world driving I am sure that cross country a 944 NA is as quick as an S2 or turbo.

When magazines say things such as "996 turbo is quicker cross country then an Evo 8" you have to wonder if they are talking blatant BS or really do drive on public b roads at 140 mph.

In some ways I wish I still had my S2 because the engine was great, but the body was rotten. I got the Lux for all the reasons mentioned, ie. cheap to maintain and run, insurance, good handling etc. I have fitted a stainless performance exhaust (the original needed replacing anyway) which I got cheap ÂŁ120 for the whole system, and then I just wondered if there was anything else that might extract a teeny weeny bit more power, but apart from a performance air filter (which probably won't make any difference) it seems there is nothing. You can't even get a chip for the early model.

A serious question, has anybody ever fitted nitrous ?
 
I'm sure I read somewhere (in another post?) that you could put a later ECU in an early car, both being 2.5 N/A's and then do a chip upgrade? I think that the person to speak to is Andy at Promax!
 
Even a chip's not going to make much difference

Enjoy it for what it is (or buy a turbo [;)])

I've done the loud exhaust and stripes thing on WUF and seem to recall that it works quite well ..... but it is a turbo though.
 
one way you can at least make it feel a little more responsive,( cheaply) is to fit a throttle cam. you might try to reduce the weight a bit too . chuck out the spare wheel and tools and all the junk in the boot. (get a puncture repair bottle instead)
chuck out everyhing you can . Put less fuel in the tank.
You'll probably save at least the weight of a passenger
Give it a good service /tuneup plugs filters etc
Also put 3-4 extra lbs in the tyres if you regularly do motorway driving Manufacturers recommend that for their tyres if driven predominantly at higher speeds

1/ Remove 944 engine, donate it to the Chinese scrap drive.
2/ Obtain Rover V8 and transmission adaptor. Tweak engine a little.
3/ Bolt into 944
4/ Enjoy :- sound, torque, reliability ( no cambelts to faff about with) and ample umph. [:D][:D][:D]

The Rover V8 is now very long in the tooth... Sounds great but not really much bang for the buck
A chevy small block............ now thats a different matter!!!

Apologies not to have done so sooner, but the poster clearly knew that there would probably not be anyone on the forum after midnight and he'd have a clear few hours. And to think he was after ouur money with that attitude!
 
Gosh - did someone have a post deleted? I thought that I was the only one who said things naughty enough for that to happen!

(And I assume that the comment about profanity was NOT referring to Neil's repeated use of the S**b word!)

On a serious note, the whole lux/S2/Turbo debate is an interesting one. It seems that the S2 and the Turbo are often mentioned in the same breath, while the Lux's are seen as a bit more of a world apart. Most of the discussion on this forum (and titanic) is about the S2 or the Turbo, and the lux boys are a bit more left out.

I have an S2, and quite often go through the "Should I swap it for a turbo?" thought-loop (as many on here will know!) However, I also have a mild fascination with the lux's, and wonder what they are like to drive. They are clearly a much cheaper option in terms of running costs, and if they are offering 95% of the experience of an S2, at 60% of the price (guesswork in terms of figures), they must be a bargain.

I'd also be very interested in going on a track day (as is mentioned elsewhere on here) to see how much there is between a lux/S2/Turbo in terms of non-straight-line performance.
