Going Backwards when it should be Forwards !

I have to admit that on maybe 3 seperate occasions I have selected Reverse instead of first and come ever so close to hitting the car behind including yesterday an Ambulance [:)] ... whilst I except a little fault , there is little to choose between the two gears and am assuming the gate has been worn away over the years , before I do hit somebody has anybody else had the same problems and is it a fix that is £££££'s or do I start in second gear .. my friend who has a 996 has driven the car and also thought that first/reverse was difficult to select...

Cheers
Chris

Never had that problem, so it may be the gate, but don't no what costs are involved.

Yes mine too. I have never managed to get into reverse without a concious effort to push past the spring loading on both 993s I have owned.

Ian.

Thanks Ian/Maurice , mine is really very easy to engage reverse when trying for first , the spring loaded action is minimal so I will get the linkage looked at in the future , in the meantime I will have to be very alert every time I select first !

Cheers
Chris

In the meantime, until you get the problem fixed, maybe select first gear by going from neutral into first via second gear, instead of going directly from neutral into first.

It's tedious, but without extra spring loading I can imagine it must be quite easy to accidentally select reverse instead of first, if you start from neutral. But from second gear, given that first is directly opposite, I would imagine that it is less likely that you accidentally curve it into reverse when moving the gearlever forward, if you know what I mean.

I've never done it in mine, BUT I let my brother have a go the other day and he did! He did a perfect rapid start, backwards []

I did think about fitting a beeper to the reversing light circuit, but just decided to keep my family away from the car instead.

I would say my spring is pretty robust, so obviously different folks...

At least I'm not the only one who has done this, even though it was a couple of years ago.....

I had just fishtailed off a roundabout (some chav in a Nova was trying to race me and the roads were damp)and as this was the first time the back end had gone, I lost my nerve a bit. when I stopped at the next set of lights I managed to select reverse instead of first and nearly ended up in the front of a Landrover[&:]

Interesting to learn of the spring mechanism for reverse. Mine's obviously worn out too.

Chris, when I first bought my car, I selected reverse rather than first on a few occassions. The second time I did it there was a car behind .... in the rear view mirror I could see the drivers eyes wide in anticipation as my car moved towards her and then stopped!

I've stopped selecting the wrong gear now because I know where first is given the reach from my driving position - perhaps your linkage is a lot more loose than mine.

Cheers Nicola/Shane at least Im not the only one to have done it, the spring action is minimal however Ive only had the car in real terms about 8 weeks and not done huge mileage therefore still getting used to the feel of the car, however the linkage is obviously quite worn and this will be something on the lists of jobs that Im sure will need doing at the nexy service , in the meantime Im just concentrating on selecting first and in the last couple of days no problems..

You can imagine the look on the face of the Ambulance driver [:)]
