Going Overseas

Hi

I may be travelling abroad for 3-6 months , having just sold my house

Can anyone recommend a safe indoor location where I can leave my Cayman whilst I am away without it costing a fortune ?

Preferably somewhere near Bristol/Gloucester or in the Midlands

Never used one but try a search on Google Secure Car Storage not a lot of them for the midlands but some professional looking outfits.

On a related one (but safely for you London based) I did see a storage garage that had a car sales and rental business at the same location. [&:]

Yes a colleague of mine just returned from holiday to find the mileage on their vehicle had increased by 1000 miles , but she couldnt prove it Absolutely shocking - it was one of those airport car parks that 'look after your car' whilst you are on holiday Spoke to Autofarm - seems reasonable enough on pricing

Thanks guys so disconnecting the battery is necessary I am sure Any other good advice before leaving the vehicle standing for a few months ?

I notice Porsche have a specialised trickle charger available for vehicles left in a garage for periods of time Its around £85 Has anyone here used this device ? Is it any different to a similar type of unit from a third party ? Would this be ok to use for 6 months constantly ?

Hi Yes I have used one on my Cayman when I store it for the winter & you plug it into the main & then into the Cars lighter & leave it alone & it does the rest & mine even turns itself off when the battery is charged & I have used mine for 3 years with no problem & when I take my Cayman out of winter storeage it start first time no problem & I even lock the car & I have no problems with the alarm going off. My vision is the Large plug & lead vision from the USA but I'm informed the Porsche vision works just like mine. I hope this information is of help to yourself. Yours Truly Kevin.[:)]

ORIGINAL: spiker Great - thanks Kevin thats what I hoped to hear Has anyone here in the UK used one ?
My mum uses one on her VW Polo - she hardly ever uses the car but the trickle charger keeps it topped-up - works perfectly, car always starts first time.

CTEK 3600 is the one most folk use & certainly half the price of your quote from OPC..... Plenty of reference to them on the forum hth Paul

I have used the CTEK 3600 for some years and its fantastic. Very easy to operate and keeps the battery in great condition. It seems that CTEK have re labeled the 3600 as the MXS 3.6. website link below:- [link=http://www.ctek.com/en/chargers/12v]http://www.ctek.com/en/chargers/12v[/link]

I've used a battery conditioner (non-Porsche and lots cheaper!) for many years, connected direct to the battery of my 968 (with the tailgate closed on the leads!) whenever she is/was in my garage. Conditioner senses when battery voltage falls, trickles it back to full then switches off. Car has always started first time - longest I left her untouched was about 3 months while abroad. Battery is currently about 9-10 years old (can't be exactly sure now as new owner has the history file!) and was still going strong when I sold the coupe a month ago. Needless to say, the newly acquired cabriolet gets the same treatment!

Got the Porsche Item bought off ebay previously unused, often come up on ebay just don't get carried away, plugs into the lighter socket, very good.

If you study the Porsche charger (£80), the C-Tek one (£40) and the ones Lidl occasionally sell for £12, they all look and function suspiciously similar. [;)]

Porsche Charge o Mat is made by Ctek and is the 3600 rebadged but the main difference apart from the labeling is that the Porsche unit has a plug to fit the lighter socket, Ctek sell an adaptor to do the same which swaps out the alternative fittings. No need to disconnect the battery and keeps the memory on stereo etc. Never seen the Lidl item but Wolf do one which looks similar to the Ctek but in photos it looks a poorer standard of finish, don't know what the inside quality is like. If you buy the Ctek make sure you get the 3600 or better, the 800 is lower rated as the number would suggest.
