Going to view an S2, Big reds option question?

I'm going to look at an S2 on Sunday in Glasgow, 1991 Titanium with bridge spoiler, the owner isn't too sure of its full spec but photos show it has big red calipers fitted and leather sports seats, does this suggest its got the MO30 spec or are these all seperate options and not fitted as a package?

Its got full service history (OPC and Specialist) with 167,000mls on the clock, belts were done 11,000mls ago, new discs and pads all round, not sure about Cam chain, any advice on what else to look for would be appreciated.

Thanks lads[;)]

Possibly just the standard calipers, but painted red??? Others will no doubt advise on how to tell the difference.

Sport seats were an option independent of MO30, as fitted to my own car, which is otherwise completely standard.

Hope it's a good one.

Big Reds/Blacks are big and won't fit over 16" wheels so that would be a first indication. They are a snug fit with 17" wheels.

Porsche script is printed onto a flat surface not as raised letters. Big Reds were never an option on 944's and would only have been fitted by the owner.

If the car has M030 it is very possible/probable it will have medium blacks (painted red perhaps). Medium blacks and big blacks/reds both have 32mm thick front discs and radial calliper mounting bolts (ie the bolts are parallel with the disc not at 90º to it.

If the owner himself isn't sure of the spec [&:] then he is probably not an enthusiast and doesn't really know what he has so you may well now more about the car than he. If they are Big Reds then you can just about fit your little finger between the calliper and the inner edge of a 17" wheel, a 16" wheel has bags of clearance.

The cam chain really ought to be changed every 50k miles on an S2 or you run the risk of it stretching and gradually rounding off the cogs on the cams. If it snaps or one of the cogs breaks off [] = £££££££

If the belts are older than three years then even if they have only done 11k miles they will need changing again soon

Since you already have a '44 I guess you know all the bodywork areas you should focus on.

Other than that I'd say you're therefore looking at :-
- Cam chain (which you've already noted
- Brakes (new discs & pads is great, but the S2 suffers plate lift etc too
- Clutch

So you know which specialist has it been to in this area?

In fact - long shot, but PM reggie if you know it. I know one titanium bridge-spoiler S2 from Glasgow which changed hands 18months or so ago and probably has that kind of mileage.... it had linen interior and (at that time) RS steering wheel, front 7mm shims and rear 18mm spacers (??)

Thanks guys, great info as always. The wheels on it are 17" Turbo twists (I love them [:D]) the owner says its been mainly serviced at Aberdeen and Glasgow OPC and then the last couple at a specialist in Glasgow (he couldn't remember the name off the top of his head) and didn't know about the chain either but if its been at OPC's you'd think that would have been done at some point, I take it the service book should have that indicated?? I'v attached some photos/links, see if they work, let me know your thoughts lads, thanks.

100% NOT Big Reds. I'm not even sure if they are medium blacks painted red. They look like bogo small blacks painted red to me.

Not 100% sure the wheels are Porsche either.

Just because it has been serviced by an OPC doesn't mean they will have done belts and chains. IMHO, because of the age of the 944, you are better off with an independant specialist.

Nick - it's not the car I know, but it does look clean in the photos.

Wheels are always contentious - I don't like the twists on a '44 but many do. Quick check on AT reveals it's 13miles from me.

OPC very unlikely to look at the chain as it's not on the official service schedule. Specialist may have.

ORIGINAL: TTM

Given the height of the disc hub I'd say this is a rear caliper.

I thought that after I'd posted - so I was right about it not being a Big Red then [;)]

The rim width and offset is wrong for the front as well..................I'll get me coat.

What do you lads think of the price £4,495, I thought it was a bit cheap compared to a few others I've seen whilst surfin the net!!

I think it's all down to the condition and what's been done to it. If it has a recent clutch, belts, cam chain, caliper refub etc etc etc it will be worth more. From what you've said about that one, the belts are not new (but not old either), but there is no information on the clutch, state of the calipers, cam chain etc.

I too suspect that those wheels aren't pukka Porka bits, which means they will have less impact on the price than if they were the real deal.

Maybe the price is about right then?

Oh my goodness [&:] what a shed!! I get upset when I see how some people treat their Porsches [] It must have been a lovely car at some point in its life. Ripped and torn interior, every tyre a different make and I'd only heard of the Dunlop!! Carpets and door cards were scruffy, head liner torn! Calipers painted by hand (and probably without removing the wheels!!) No front lights worked, a top end rebuild 80,000mls ago which he failed to mention and to top it off......... It had been resprayed in December '07 and you could still see the rust coming through on the front nearside arch [] some people.

Never mind, the search continues [;)]

So Nick, without wishing to ask a leading question, do you still think it was "a bit cheap compared to a few others you have seen"? Or stupidly overpriced? [] [:D]

Sorry to hear it was a wasted journey. Hang on in there tho', there are good ones out there, but you may have to look at a few of them to find the gems. I (and others) have recounted our buying experiences several times on here, and it can be a pretty drawn out process. BUT, rest assured, it is WELL worth it when you buy a good one ... oh yes!
