Good deal - timing belt tools

Just found this.

Was wanting to get my 86' 944 Turbo belts done but have always been put off as everybody goes on about getting the tension on it right. I have done loadsa belts over the years on other cars so happy with the spannering so could this be a good route to getting tension right, anynody aware of these and indeed ordered them. Also I believe the proper porsche tensioning tool is available from the club, is this correct and has anybody done this job themselves. Any advice greatly appreciated, cheers all. Also should I change my water pump whilst in there and also seals? or just see what they are like.

Some say change the pump every time but at the cost of it I would say get your belts off and make an informed decision when you get to the pump. You sound as though you know your eggs so that is what I would advise.

You can borrow my Arnn Worx tools Alex if you are local to me. I have a set of belts to do on 2 turbos very shortly, you are more than welcome to come and have a look at what you need to do. There can be a couple of fiddly bits but if you have done belts before, nothing major. Check the pump pulley for play when you get the belts off, it is worth changing the seals if you know they have not been done, you will probably find one is leaking anyway, it is rare to see it dry in there. I am doing my own belts, pump and rollers on my S2 at the mo. The pump will be going on very soon as I got the new thermostat gasket and metal shim for it yesterday after some very poor OPC service again!!!
I also got the PS pump off and given a good steam clean, I am also changing the engine mounts as well as the exhaust side one is pretty compressed as usual!

Absolutely. There are a few things free to non-members, like the forum, but all the really good stuff is what we pay for! Except, of course, most people don't actually pay for membership, as the discounts and benefits available should cover the fee anyway. [:)]
 
Hey all, yeah I would actually rather do it myself as I find with garages they are always under a time constraint and if you take your time and read up on things you can 9/10 do a better job yourself. I work offshore so have couple weeks of at a time, so will strip front end off, take it if i take the nose/badge panel off and wiggle intercooler and radiator about i will get loadsa space to tackle this.

Sulzeruk, thanks for offer, know bonnybridge as my cousin stays there, but I am actually up on Isle of Lewis so defo not local, but really appreciate the offer, thanks. Maybe this is the impetous I need to join the club as been meaning to do it for a while, plus would give me access to the tools. Concerning the flywheel lock, I usually just use a big screwdriver or pry bar when have done other cars, is this possbile on the 944. Assuming this is to get bottom pulley bolt off, yeah? Am I right in saying the oil pump drive is off this as well and it is not keyed onto shaft and so you must get it well tight (do you put new bolt on just old one with threadlock and what is the torque figure) on reassembly.

I plan to hang onto my turbo a while as have been slowly improving it and put new sills and got her resprayed recently so from that point of view she sorted. Want to do the belts etc as although car has only done about 10-15k since they were last done, its about 4-5 years or so. I also have a new mount as have the vibration at idle, although car not idling the now as think the tps is wonky or ICV, also car seems to run really rich (smoky and stinks of fuel at the high idle it sits at the now, although fine when driving, defo rich mixture smoke and not oil or anything) if anybody has any suggestions on that (flow meter another possiblitity?).

Anyway to do the belt, do I just need the clubs gauge and something to lock the flywheel, is that the bare minimum in terms of special tools required? Thanks all

Alex, a flywheel lock is handy to have and not mega expensive too buy. Well worth having. The crank nut needs to be tight as the oil pump is not keyed onto the shaft so if they loosen, you lose oil pressure. It can be a bit of a faff to get into the big pulley bolt with the 2 rad fans but I use a breaker bar and a short 3 inch extension which just gets in. A small 2 leg puller is sometimes handy to get the crank pulleys off. Also, you will need a peg spanner to hold the balance belt pulleys to get the 17mm nuts undone. Drop me a pm if you want any other advice when you do them,
