Good for another 100,000 mile?

Just been offered a 993, all the right bits, nice clean car, serviced from new at Porsche dealers. Just had a major service everthing done, bills to prove.
Asking price is £26k (M plate) but has done 100,000 miles.

Should I stay well away from a 100 thousand mile car?

I know it' s difficult to comment on a car you have not seen, but how would you feel if you saw say a 993 for sale with 125k miles on the clock for £23k and had full Porsche service history and was in spotless condition would you go and look or would you stay clear because of the mileage?

I' m having trouble with this, I think I have spent to long in the presence of car traders.

Personally, I would' nt contemplate a car with that sort of mileage. And in my opinion £26k for an M plate 100,000mile 993 is to much by far.

Although something to consider if you do give the car some more thought is that an OPC service history alone is not enough when it comes to this sort of mileage. The car may have been serviced but each service may have thrown up £1000' s of additional work that was not completed. If you are considering buying a high mileage 993 ensure the seller is 10foot tall when standing on all the receipts for the cars history!

Yep, starting to think the same way.

Just not cheap enough to make it interesting. I think that resale would be a big problem, think 2 years on with another 30,000 miles on the clock...... OUCH!!

back to the drawing board.

When I was looking for a 993 a 126k 996 came up - for less money than the 993. I posted a note on another board to see what the feedbackw as and they pretty much all said that by then things are wearing out - regardless of the age (ie springs have taken a longer nashing etc etc), plus the fact that you have to find the right person to buy the car from you when you sell it... so in the end I walked away. Trouble is, the money always looks good so you think about it. Heart vs head - head should win! Andy
 
I' m a bit surprised about people' s high mileage concerns - do we British still have a mileage obsession? In my experience, even a new basic sub-£10,000 car will have no worries about getting to and way beyond 100,000 miles.
 
I looked at a lot of low mileage cars that don' t seem to get enough use and suffered as a result, when I bought my first 944 I ended up with one that had done 130,000 miles and it drove and looked a lot nicer than some I looked at with 50 - 70K.
My current car had 90K on it when I got it and now 2 years on it has 130K ok I have new shocks and some suspension bushes - also turbo needed a refurb but now it is better than ever and laps up the miles,

I' m not bothered by high mileage in a Porsche either IF it' s been looked after properly. You obviously have to take each car individually but if a 100k car has recently had clutch, shocks, brakes or maybe even a top end overhaul then it obviously has more life in it than a 70k car that is still on its original consummables.

Another thing to bear in mind is that as cars get older many parts have to be replaced simply because they are old. Rubber will perish, linkages will seize etc. Why pay a premium for an 8 year old 50k car when an 8 year old 100k one may have been maintained better. Again every car is differet of course.

Obviously I am biased. I bought my S2 at just under 100k and have put nearly 50k on in 5 years. Then I went and bought a 72k Turbo last year and have already racked up another 26k miles
 
Surprised by the concerns of mileage on a these types of cars. Mine is a 96 Targa which has now run up 14K miles in the year and is at 91K on the clock.
Its used every day and I do long trips to Hampshire and back. This is my 3rd PORSCHE with high miles, and I have also owned low mileage examples to.
What is all the fuss about ?
These cars are fantastic to drive and I couldnt bear to leave mine in the garage!

We brought a 996 C2 with 73k on the clock last august and again had similar concerns at first, however we have had a great year, we looked at lower milage ones in far worse condition. we had an idle valve not reading correctly which our OPC cured and other than new tyres and some suspension work to stop the squeaks no problems! I agree that we are a little too hung up on the milage, a well used car is normally a well loved car and well looked after hopefully.
Not regreted our purchase at all and not intention of selling her even though its now 88k.[:)]
 
Looks like its ' below average mileage' to me....
100,000 divided by 9 (94?) works out at below the 12,000 quoted.

OK that' s for ' daily' cars like Mondeos and Golf but one would expect a 911 to have higher quality components than those to begin with.

A daily driver car with 100,000 miles is likely to be in better condition than 25,000 mile essentially track day car.

Get a very good inspection done by your garage or expert (in 993s) and see what that throws at you. If there are suspect items...clutch etc you will know how hard to bargain to get that price down.....

I have a 125,000 mile Audi S2 which feels and drives as well as one with 60K...why? because it was looked after and serviced correctly. As I have no intention of selling it in the next 5 years or so resale is not of great importance....because by then it' s a 14/15 year old car with of some value as it' s quite rare.

In that sort of time scale 993s will be where early 964s are now....not quite classic, not new enough to have that value..so the only ones which will be valueable are the very rare 30-40K ones in mint condition in the right colour etc......

So it depends on what you want to do with, as a fun car for a couple of years and then resell at the same value its probably a no-no, as one to keep for longer then get a better price and have some money to cover any unexpected issues it is more promising.
 
I thought I had talked myself out of the Porsche thing until I saw this..

' 94 993 C4 six speed, 44,000 mile FSH dark metalic silver, light interior.

Must be the sexiest car (remember, I drive an Elise) I' ve seen.

The mileage (for resale) was the hang up with the other one, and I agree with EVERYTHING you all have said. Like Tom says though, when it comes to selling.......

Anyway, it' s through a trader and he wants £32,000.
Any comments.. Oh yes, it' s sooooo clean and just had a big service.

As has been said before.... most modern cars will do several hundred thousand miles without problems, and the engineering and build quality of Porsche will make them go even further.... 90% of Porsches built are still on the road... imagine what miles some of them have done!!! Buy on condition rather than mileage, and the best bargains are often the high milers but you do need a good discount unless you are looking at long ownership, because high mileage will always deter a large number of buyers.
