Good Place to Get a 944

Hi,

I am looking for a good 944, my old one has long expired and just wondered if anyone had a dealer or two to recommend.

I have about 8-9k and would like a S2 ( not a turbo )[8|]

With that sort of money, you might as well go and get a really expensive one from a specialist dealer!

You should be looking at minters at that price! £9k would buy you a very good Turbo!

Have a look on Autotrader, and have a look in the back of the PCGB Mag and 911 & 911 World Mag for the best examples.

Good luck in finding one expensive enough (and worth it!)

If you want the convenience of buying from a specialist dealer then Autobahn in Coventry seem quite good.

There's a thread on one of the forums -- boxa.net? -- slating them, so nice to hear of some postive experiences.
9k should get you a good S2 and leave enough money to run it for a year or two.

Had mine from there.

I looked at a couple from there before I got mine private from Autotrader.... They must have had an off weekend when I went if they are supposed to be "specialist"

How about a Cabriolet?[:)]

8-9K should get you a really nice one and I know just the place....

pm me for more info if interested

£8-9k is going to get you a split mint S2 in the current market , IMO £5-7k should also get you a nice car that doesnt require any awful lot of expenditure in the first few months..

Chris
PS My S2 is up for sale on pistonheads and is a lovely car

I looked at the one at Shirley's garage in Meriden. It's very nice - great colour - low mileage and very shiny etc but a bit pricey for an F plate IMHO. But I did like the salesman - a really genuine bloke who knew his stuff.

Autobahn is stuffed full of Boxsters, and I got the impression that anyone looking for something as lowly as a £5K 944 wasn't too high on their list of customers. The much hyped turbo there was worn smooth and really didn't inspire me.

I wouldn't worry about the age of an S2. They are all F to J and the J-platers are '91 cars that didn't sell immediately, so in other words all late '89 to '91 and when even the new ones are 14+ years old a 2 year difference is immaterial compared to how it's been looked after.

....... I note that contributions to the the 944 register page have been somewhat sparse in the recent past.

That's 'cos none of us have been sending stuff in - it is (was) our magazine after all, at least it was the last time I looked.

I think the fallow years were perhaps while Nick was stand in register sec. and he was busier than a really busy person working in the busy capital of busy land.

As I understand (by decree) regional and register reports are going to be so short that it is unlikely that you will notice if they are there or not in future.

Buying a 15 year old car is going to be a gamble where ever you get it.

Old things break, no matter how well you look after them, things do wear out.

A massive pile of bills is always good to demonstrate provenance but, just because someone has spent £5,000 on repairs over the last year, doesn't mean you aren't going to spend another £5,000 the following year.

Condition is everything on an old car. With reports of rust on 944's now this is the most important thing to look out for - everything else can be fixed if you throw enough money at it.

Oh yes we `ave! And as both you and I know we sometimes have to wait a long time before it gets published, but certainly more guys from here could send stuff in...on a similar contentious theme and a propos of nothing did you realise that in the PCGB advetising leaflet, available in reception at your local OPC they promote every register logo in the club except 944. Look just inside cover at the forum logos.

John,
The trouble with the stuff you send in is, it's too good for the register section so they have to move it into a proper article,

Then its too good for the rest of the mag so they have to shorten it [&:],

This obviously takes time, so it then takes months to appear.

Maybe they should ask you to edit them yourself [;)]

Here's a thought. My 944 (getting it tomorrow [:)] ) is pretty much absolutely as original. Martyn's car (which looks fantastic) is distinctly non-original. OK, it's down to the individual concerned as to what they are looking for, but from the prices involved it appears that the originality factor which would matter greatly to a 'classic-car' bloke is not as important in 944s as the overall appearance and level of goodies. But if (when) the 944 does become genuinely collectible, I'm guessing that the original spec motors would be worth more....?

I only ask because those side skirts look the business, and I need a damn good reason not to go there [:D]
