Good service from McGard

Just thought I'd mention this, it may help someone out of a muddle. Bought a parts car recently. It has nice wheels on it, but came with locking wheel nuts (the bain of my life) and no key. They weren't the aluminium Porsche ones (I can deal with those easily), but McGard ones, which were a very snug fit down the recesses in the wheels, and made of hardened steel, making them very difficult to shift without damaging the wheel, stud or both. I contacted McGard in Germany, explained the situation, and they were happy to identify the code from a photograph of the nut, and after seeing the V5 and some ID, supply 2 new keys for 30 Euro. Ordered on a Friday and arrived the following Tuesday. I thought this was excellent customer service, and saved me a lot of hassle. Well done McGard.

Good service from the Germans as usual, but I'd remove all the McGard lockers and replace with
either OE or better designed ones only the star shape design is very weak and it's not recommended to torque
the locker up with this design as it'll break at some point.

You cant whack an old socket onto the better McGards, because they have a hardened spinner, and Porsche 944 McGards leave very little space around the edge for any sort of anything. With regards to the silly comment above, McGards are by far and away the best locking nuts for a 944, with the OEM effort being comically inferior.

944 man is right. Not enough clearence to whack a socket over these ones and they sat in very deep recesses.

Yes the Mcgard ones (Star shape) cause so many issues, although I've been taking them out for customers over 10 years now when the spindly star shape gets damaged or breaks or someone's lost it etc...

I've used this kit (below) with 100% success which involves a (Soft) Brass insert which easily hammers into the star pattern, effectively creating a new key which can then be easily removed. This kit also covers a high percentage of other locking styles...
