Goodwood Trackday - August 14th

Hi all
I hope this is not against the rules because it's not a PCGB event and it's in some way an advert but for lovers of Porsches and tracks everywhere, I thought I'd bring it to everyone's attention.

A guy on DDK has organised a trackday/event at Goodwood and there are some spaces left. I've no affiliation or financial interest (other than I've booked a place) but it would be great to see something like this get off the ground - and we all know how hard it is to organise events like this!

Noise limit is 105db - unusual for Goodwood. More details below:

Hi Ant , well it was a great day for those that turned up . A few more DDKers than PCGBers perhaps [;)]

Nick Faure drove Stephen's ( The Baron ) beautiful black 356A first off , and treated it well , it put on a good turn of speed in his hands. He then jumped into Stuart's red 2.2S Targa and went a bit faster , on return there was a little smoke coming out the back from the engine grille [8|].....
Next up for Nick was my 2.4 engined 911E which he drove with a bit more pace than I was managing but otherwise about 90% the same in terms of timing of gear changes and braking.....he did not hit the rev limiter which I was doing at exit from pit straight chicane (7350 for me)......pretty steady really , maybe he was bored .

Next up was you I think !!! I guess Nick was probably wanting a bit more excitement by then [8|].....and maybe the already present rumbling noise from your engine was the catalyst for a lot of smoke to appear.....hope it turns out to be not too serious .... let us know progress .

I'll sign off with a video clip from the day ....shows the early damp and the lowering skies , and how we had the track to ourselves and what a great noise the early cars make 5000 to 7200 rpm [:D]

It was a great day...shame not more people responded to the call though it was good for those of us there with limitless track time.
Couple of highlights had to include the Spitfire and Hurricane low fly past (I managed to blag a trip to coningsby to look at them in private) and the Nick Faure demo laps. I suspect I will pay the price though. Think the big end has gone.[]
Car will be up to Neil Bainbridge's this week - thanks to Nick Moss' generosity in towing the car away (when the RAC refused) - for a proper look at. But I'm not feeling confident

The upside is that I've realised what an amazing car that little racer is. It's now been driven by three (in my opinion) greats - Nick Faure, Barrie Whizzo Williams and Ivan Dutton. And without exception the response has been the same - that it's beautifully balanced, extremely quick and a pleasure to drive. In fact it's only let down by its regular driver! It will be back!
It was great to meet you and hope we'll catch up again soon

Very nice John....especially the sound now that you've sorted out the interference you were getting on the little spy cam [:)]

Cheers Steve! Thanks again for getting the spycam for me.....I have a video showing me fitting it in place and being spotted by the pitlane marshal....who came up and interrogated me concerned that it was a TIMING device , I explained it was a spy camera which caused some further confusion (!) ....lucky I dont have a Russian accent....he then tested its mounting by trying to pull it off the dash , fortunately the gaffer tape and velcro held together [:D] .

I was a bit concerned by being overtaken by the 260hp/ 940kg 911ST replica , so after the trackday I went down to Bob Watson in deepest Oxfordshire farm country for a rolling road power checkup.......you can see /hear the result in following clip [8|]

An update on Goodwood trackdays , I went along to the 'easytrack' day on Friday 27 August.

Awfully wet and a bit cold in the morning , drying out in the afternoon , 30 cars were booked in but only 25 turned up , and were organised into 3 lots of 10 , going out for 15 minute sessions.

The sting in the tail was the 98db noise limit , measured with a microphone held 50cm from exhaust tip and with engine held at 3/4 of redline revs . This is a pretty stringent test for an early 911 to pass.
However I had got on successfully before at a 98 db day using a perforated tailpipe extension in Nov 2008....so I trusted that a combination of this and declaring redline 6000rpm would work. It did - measured at 97db [:D] [:D]

There was only one other Porsche there....it was a 924S....and it went very well driven by 'iguana' ....I should have bagged a passenger ride to look and learn how its done. I did pluck up the courage to go a bit quicker in the afternoon , not as fast as a 964RS which is the only other Porsche I have driven round Goodwood , but closing in on my classic car performance target set by a lady in a baker's delivery vehicle from the prancing horse stable....[;)]
