Google street view

Anyone spotted their car on street view? Despite being mostly garaged they went past my house when it was on axle stands on the drive (last autumn I think). Still... at least it was clean.

I must admit I'm not sure how I feel about this. Seems to me a car thief can now browse the internet looking for likely vehicles! You can make out the last letter on the number plate and although partially obscured you can see it's a turbo.

Hello Mr Thief - fast car at this address!!

I've not looked yet but I doubt mine will be. Can't see what all the fuss is about to be honest. Any prospective terrorists can stake out their intended targets any time as streets are open to the public so don't really see how an out of date photograph on Google street view is going to provide them with any special intel. And as for those getting caught playing away behind their wives/girlfriends backs - well it was only a matter of time before they got caught out anyway.

It could mean that prospective tea leaves do some of their homework from the comfort of their laptop rather than prowling the streets? I guess when the first case comes to court where it can be shown that street view was used as a planning tool...............till then I suppose we will have to wait and see.

Fears are unfounded I think. The notion that people with struggle with Google Streets awkwardly navigating up and down endless random roads looking for old cars to steal is fanciful. The aerial photographs that have been available for years have been a far better planning tool for people who are up to no good, but no one has ever mentioned those...

Some ejit on the BBC News website said it wasn't a risk because you couldn't read house numbers - obviously forgetting it's tied to a chuffin' map!
If they happen to spot my Porsche outside my house (unlikely) I will ask them to remove the image. Whilst this system doesn't provide much more than can be done by anyone, at least if you or a neighbour spot someone casing your abode, you could get a description and report them to the Rozzers.

So, an unregulated Big Brother can be watching you.

I, for one, have not given Google my permission to use any images of me or my property for any purpose whatsoever. If everyone wrote to say that to Google - we have a right to privacy under the Human Rights Act 1998 and they should delete anything that refers to you or your private property.

And if the police decides to use the images?

Please think this one through, folks. We are sleepwalking into something unpleasant.

Move to the sticks! They won't be Google streetviewing my patch.[;)] Very clear on Google Earth, though. Does the same apply to that, Julian?
