got any tyres recomendations?

Just been through this with my 928 S4. Got 4 Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3s for 397 quid including vat, fitting and balance at Bracknell Tyre and Battery in West London outside M25. Popular choices for N rated are the knee jerk reaction of buying Michelin Pilot Sport - a lot more expensive 150 to 200 quid each!! Pirelli pzeros of any description and Bridgestone S02 are still available and are N rated (Goodyears aren't yet but are Y rated etc.) Lastly for value as well are Toyo Proxe T1s. Come recommended.

Best advice is have a look at these links yourself.

You can then decide for yourself. I'm very pleased with the deal I got and the tyres. They have transformed the car's handling, are quiet and grippy.

Have a look around.

Cheers

Keep away from contis (the grip changes too markedly as they wear).

N rated then Pirelli PZero rosso or Dunlop SP9090s give good wet/dry grip, wear and noise balance.

Goodyear F1s or Yokohama AVS Sport (forget old stories of rapid wear rate) if you want to go non N rated.

Hi Rich

Sounds like a very good deal on the Eagle F1s. What size are your tyres and would you have a phone number / contact for Bracknell Tyre and Battery?

Thanks

I'm running 225/45/17s at the front and 255/40/17s at the rear.

The details for Bracknell Tyre and Battery are:

Bracknell Tyre & Battery Co.LtdUnit 1, Longshot Lane Ind Est, Longshot Lane, Bracknell, Berkshire RG12 1RL Tel: 01344 411323

Good luck. They are very quick and normally next day delivery. I arrived with 6 cars in front of me and left an hour later with all fitted etc.

Yokohama AVS Sport are indeed N rated [N1 spec] / Porsche approved:

When I collected my car from Zuffenhausen, I was expecting to see either Contis/Pirellis/Michelin. I was a little bit surprised to see Yokohama's gracing the 18" Turbos! However, the customer delivery representative quickly dispelled any reservations I had with this brand. 3 years on and several Yokohama AVS Sport's later, I don't think I'd opt for different rubber unless I change cars.

A point of intrest. I just tried to order the Eagle F1s & was told that they are not made for size 205/50/ ZR 17 (fronts).

I am presently running Contisport 205/50 ZR 17 (N1) fronts & Pirelli P6000 255/40 ZR17 (Y) Rears. I know mixing is a no no. Twas not me it was the previous owner, honest. Anway I just wanted to check that I at least have the correct tyre sizes. Can anyone confirm this for me.

'N' rated? Is this the speed rating?

Anyway it looks like the Eagle F1's are out. I was thinking about the Toyo Proxi's for all weather road driving. Can I go wrong?

Thanks

Steve,

The "N" rating is nothing to do with the speed rating. It is the sequential approval number issued by Porsche for tyres made to their approved specification and - according to Porsche - are the only ones recommended for fitment to Porsche models.

Not all tyre manufacturers submit tyres to Porsche for approval and only specific sizes are submitted for the current car range. Any tyres which were submitted for the 964 when it was in production will no longer be available anyway although you will almost certainly find some sizes approved for the 993/996/Boxster which WILL fit.

Personally, since I've got 18s on my 964 I was lucky to find the Yokohama AVS Sport which has been approved for the Boxster in the correct sizes for my 8.5/10 wheels.

Just to go back to the N number - it will be moulded into the sidewall of the tyre as N0, N1 N2 etc., the number being the sequential number for a particular tyre type. Each time the manufacturer submits the same upgraded tyre type to Porsche, Porsche will assign the next number. It is recommended by Porsche that you ONLY fit the same tyre type AND N number to all four wheels. Tyres assigned N numbers by Porsche are ONLY available in the correct Y or Z speed rating.

Hope that helps.

Regards

I thought that having a non N rated tyre could cause problems with insurance in the event of a claim? Is this not the case?

I fitted Conti Sports Contacts to my 944 Turbo and was really impressed with them. They transformed the handling in the wet and dry, and were also much quieter than the Michelins beforehand.

Steve
