Got her back!

Well, i got my S2 back yesturday, picked her up after getting both sills replaced, got it booked in for an MOT on monday morning. Id forgotten how fast they are, especially compared to my Astra, caught me off gaurd on the way home!
Cost for the sills to be fitted shocked me though - £2000! They did have to cut off the lower section of each rear wing and fabricate a new part but i supplied the sills from Porsche. They mentioned some rust on the inner sill but theres nothing in the notes about that, might just of been surface rust or something? Is this the usual price to have the sills done?
I have to say it looks fantastic, like new. I didn't get any pictures because i had to go to work and its done nothing but rain since, hopefully ill take some on monday!
Also, does anyone know what the little diamond shape dent is in the sills bought from Porsche?

I think the diamond dent is to denote where to use the jack. There is only one jacking point for the spare wheel jack in the middle of the sill so the whole of one side of the car is jacked up.

Great news Alex, I'll bet it's nice to have her back.

£2000 does sound a bit steep but did they have to paint the rear quarters and front wings too? Hopefully they removed the surface rust on the inner sill and then treated it to prevent it recurring

I always suggest allowing £1k per side. It might well be less for a small bodyshop in an area with cheap labour rates to repair if the damage isn't too bad, but it often seems to be nearer this. At least you know that if done well, and then regularly treated to Dinitrol or similar, it will last another 20 years....[:)]

Indeed, thats what i keep telling myself. they put waxoil on the inner sills too so im hoping those will last for another 20 years.I just hope theres no other big bills any time soon. Its going in for a full service soon, i asked about taking a look at the cam chain but the guy there suggested it wasnt worthwhile as they rarely fail and its "pretty involved". Would it be worthwhile to do so or wait for the belts to be changed some time next year? Its done 140k miles now!

I have my chain and tensioner slipper changed every 50k miles. Over the years we have seen too many S and S2 models suffer from camchain issues which ends up destroying the engine ££££££. If your mechanic has not heard of this I would worry how familiar he is with the potential problem

According to that website its not as big a job as i thought? I would guess changing the chain could be more of a job but just checking its within tolerences (im assumed porsche has pre-set limits for this?) won't take that long will it?

Are sills becoming a problem on 944's?

Its been years since I last owned a 944 and was thinking of getting a another one as a track toy, possibly a turbo.

I know when I last owned one, one of the great things everyone said was they were galvanized and so never rusted?

Cills, yes. Bottoms of wings as well, particularly on S2/turbo.

That's not a reason to be put off, just something to be aware of when buying and budgeted for when owning. I can't think of a 20-year-old car that corrodes less? Galvanising helps, but isn't perfect.

Unfortunately they are all a bit older now and the galvanising won't stave it off forever [8|]

Sills and bottom of wheel arches are the only common places

Alex, mine has just gone into the same place as yours today - they did say they had quite a bit of work to do on yours....[;)]

Should have back for mid july, when I get back from my holiday[:)]

Ive just been through the entire service history of my car and found the cam chain was replaced at 86k while the head was bieng rebuilt - part of the labour says "remove plastic residue from oil gallery" and everything was cleaned/blasted/lapped in there and the cams were both replaced with used parts. This worries my a touch as it suggests that plastic bit under the chain (is it the tensioner?) failed? None of the valves or pistons were replaced though. Seeing this i'll wait til next year and replace the chain with the belts, having just spent £2.5k on the sills and then failed MOT on corroded brake lines which im just about to go pay for i don't think i can afford to get that replaced now as well.
