Got it at last

[:)] The Carrera is home at last.

Drove it up the 120 miles last night on open A roads that I know very well.

First real impressions ?, steering is heavy, but direct. Car turns in well and has more grip than the STi. Sound is amazing, almost frightning.

Brakes are very good (More feel than the Brembo's on the STi or the EVO)

In the dark, the switches are impossible to fathom (more experience is required).

BUT, it feels so special, just like a Porsche should

Dads not too sad as his 997 is here too

Hum, it seems like learning the switches is a walk in the park compared to fathoming the ventilation.

Drove home from a freinds house this morning, took me sometime to de-mist the windscreen :)

Only a couple of niggles
Is the rear wiper meant to autopark ?, mine seems to keep going.
The central locking/alarm stopped locking the doors last night, wiggled the wires in the centre console and its started working again, bit of investigation needed.
Front brake piston on one side does not seem to retract enough and I get a bit of vibration when turning gently after braking, prob lack of use as it seems to be reducing.

Otherwise, I am over the moon and even the wife seems to like it (unbelieveably, its actually quieter than my standard Subaru STi).

Yes, the wiper is supposed to park. Check the fuses in the rear left hand side of the engine compartment. Actually with these cars checking fuses is not easy. Better to throw them away and replace with new. This cost me a fortune with 2 mechanics that tested fuses and presumed they were 100%.... [:'(]

You might want to strip that caliper. Rust forms on the caliper bore and causes the piston to stick. The problem won't be in the fluid side but you still need to remove the piston to get at it. Pull the circlip that holds the dust sheild and remove the dust sheild. Don't disconnect the brake line until you get the piston out [:D]. Use the brake pedal to get the piston out.

I hate central locking, I disconnected mine...

As for the heater it is excellent! Anyone that says its not obviously doesn't have one that is working as it should or they do not know how to use it.

To demist, place the rotary in between the seats on full. On the dash you can blend in cold air if you want to with the two top levers.
The second level lever (below the top one) IIRC chooses whether you want the air up high or down low. Choose high.
The next level lever (lowest) is for the windscreen vents. Place it all the way to the right for fully open.

The reason the top level has two levers is so that you can shut off cold air coming in to the car. To do this move the first lever to the left & also turn the fan off by moving the right hand lever to the left also.

Make sense?

Oh, btw, the dial between the seats is actually a thermostat for cabin temperature. You will hear a small motor whizzing back and forth to control cabin temp. Try say no.3 for a nice temp.

Thanks, after your notes, had a learning session with the ventilation and I think I get it now.

Will have a look at the caliper, but after the last trip it seems to have gone away.

Pity its gone all wet, I want to save the car for dry days to prolong its life (for another 20 years at least).

It also seems to have a couple of mono-block bridged Blaupunkt power amps under the drivers seat, don't look standard but they must be late 80's versions as the car has been in the family since 1991 and Dad did not fit them.

A porsche owner at last, got to get club membership sorted (hoping for it as a christmas present as I bought Dad his membership when he first got the car).

Mine also has a Blaupunkt amp under the drivers seat. It was a factory option 'Sound Upgrade' and if you get a list of the option codes you should see it on the barcoded sticker under the bonnet. You should find that the o/s rear mat is tailored to accomodate the amp if you have the original mats. Mine has the original toronto head unit and the sound quailty if pretty poor - I dread to think the quality of the sound without the upgrade!
