Got my car back together!

I finnaly got my cat back together after almost 9 months !! The only problem was me not doing up part of the fuel rail properly and it pissing fuel everywhere [:)] Tightened that up and it started on the 2nd attempt, even though the volt gauge was reading 10.
The first thing i noticed though was one of the injectors is very noisey, much more so than it used to. Would anyone recommend using some of that injector cleaner stuff? I friend of mine used it and it wrecked his car (disiesal Mondeo though) so im a bit unsure. I know the injectors are noisy anyway, but this was audible for quite a distance.

Other then that everything seems to be fine and no more oil burning smell!

The noise might be your tappets - if the car has stood for a while they will need to pressurise again & this can take quite a while. Drive it for 10-15 mins & the noise may well go away.

Thanks,

I drove it for roughly an hour today and it didn't seem to get any better. But the oil burning smell is back. I'm assuming its valve guides at the moment, i'll do a compression test and find someone who can do a leak down test.
Does anyone know what could cause a burning oil smell to come from the engine? I can smell it when driving... Theres also a bit of smoke under acceleration but I', not sure if thats normal as it doesn't have a cat.

could be oil dripping onto exhaust

smoky exhaust isn't good - if it's under load then that is more likely to be rings, not valve guides. The car shouldn't smoke on acceleration.

FWIW I've used Redex Injector cleaner on a Vectra 2.0 SRI that had tickover problems (recommended fix by a local garage/tuners) with success, and I've been using it on my S2 to even out a lumpy tickover. The Porsche seems to run OK with it.

It certianly worked a treat on the Vectra, but only a marginal improvement on the S2...I suspect that bigger problems need to be properly sorted, but you'll find plenty of expertise on here to help you sort it out! Worth a try, then, maybe??

Ref your friend's Mondeo, you do have to be so careful these days not to confuse fuels/additives for petrol or diesel, don't you!!

Ill try the injector cleaner when i can then

Compression test results were:
4: 198psi
3: 182
2: 189
1: 198

Which seem ok, within 10% of each other at least...

I'm guessing the cost of an engine rebuild would start at about £1k and head towards 2 for rings etc?

AFAIK a compression test only test the top ring - but a leakdown test will give you better info.

The problem with costing engine rebuilds is that here's always plenty of "while you're in there" jobs - if you're doing the rings, then why not do the bearings, refresh the head, new waterpump etc...

Can you see any evidence of oil leaks? - or oil in the breather setup?

Worth adding that I had a noisy injector on the S2 (3rd one) that was caused or rather made much worse by the fuel pressure regulator wearing out. That was at about 160K miles. On my 968 the same injector is occasionally a little noisy and ISTR the pressure regulator is original so again on that car may need replacing at some point, in this case currently at 154K miles so similar ball park.

You would either need some kit to measure fuel pressure or if your a Guru like Jon Mitchell you just know [:D] [He listened to the injectors using a stephoscope and judged that the noise was the injectors struggling with too much fuel pressure]
