Got myself a Cayman - strange starting problem though

Hi everyone,

Ive been a member for a couple of years as I bought my first Porsche in 2010 (Boxster S 2004 edition) and just upgraded to a 2009 Cayman S last week.

I bought the car from Sytner BMW in Birmingham and being frank the dealer lied through his teeth about pretty much everything but I did manage to get what I think was a fair deal on the car, warts and all (tyre tread depth and general paintwork condition).

One thing thats happened a few times since I picked her up is that when starting after a short stop, say to get petrol, I press the clutch fully and turn the ignition round as normal but Im greeted with a terrible noise and the car doesnt start, it just stops with my hand still turned clockwise. I wait a few seconds and try again and the noise isnt as bad and it starts.

Im not a mechanic but thought it might be the starter motor not fully engaging with the flywheel possibly?

Bar that Ive grown to like the car over the past week. My initial enthusiasm was wiped out by selling my old car, getting a one way ticket from Glasgow to Birmingham plus a day off work to arrive and find the car not as described but not having much wiggle room as the dealer knew I had travelled far.

Thanks for any advice on this one :)

Kind regards,

Rikki

I take it you got a warranty with the car? I'm sure Edinburgh OPC is part of the Sytner group. Your diagnosis is probably correct.

Rikki, I'd also agree with Archie that you probably have a starter motor problem. Also, it could be that the battery's on the way out....low cranking voltage possibly. Poor service from the supplying dealer if they haven't picked up this problem; so much for the 111-point check? Whatever, get it checked out ASAP by your local PC and get out and enjoy the car. Jeff

Agree with all of the above. Take it back to Glasgow or Edinburgh under warranty. For what it's worth, the original Porsche battery on my Cayman died last year, but not before giving starting issues similar to those you describe. If it is the battery, sadly it probably won't be covered by the warranty, and worse still you will have to buy a stupidly overpriced Porsche one so as not to invalidate the warranty. Hope you get it sorted, whatever the issue. JH

I don't think that Sytner Birmingham where he got the car are Porsche Dealers, which may mean that it is only a dealership warranty not as Porsche unless it was agreed at the time. What warranty have you got Rick?

It seems strange to me that it was the Sytner BMW Dealership in Birmingham that sold this car as there is a Sytner Porsche Dealership in Solihull, I would have expected that they would have traded cars by brand across the group to sell at a best price etc. Anyway I hope that Sytner actually come through north of the border and sort the problem charging anything back to Sytner BMW.

Thank you for the replies and apologies for the delay in replying. I had set it to email me with a notification but I never received one so thought the thread was dormant. The good news is that the problem has never returned. I spoke with the previous supplying company RSJ Sports Cars to get more background on the vehicle as the salesman from Sytner knew nothing and they told me its history, I also mentioned the starter motor issue and they said that I may not be fully depressing the clutch when starting. Since then Ive been more heavy handed (footed?) with the starting and the noise has never reappeared - thankfully. As for the warranty on the car I was told 6 months mechanical and 3 months electrical. Im still waiting for the documents to arrive and have chased this up already. If they try and wiggle out I'll kindly remind them I have my phone calls presales and postsale recorded with them detailing what was involved. Thanks again for your help :) Rikki PS: The battery was changed by RSJ (they told me on the phone) last year :)

Glad to hear that Rikki, questions and answers are a large amount of what the forum is here for. Enjoy the Cayman![;)]
