GPS camera detectors

Hi,

Am thinking about buying the Road Angel Plus (guess that there must be quite a few people who get to 6 points [37 and 39 mph respectively!] and then finally fork out for these things). 'Plus' is relatively expensive, but its' wireless feature means that wifey and kids cars will benefit when I'm not in the Boxster.....

A few questions:

1. Anyone using one - good / bad features?

2. Apparently, if the windscreen has UV glass, I'll need to buy an antenna to allow the GPS to function properly. Looking at the Boxster standard specification, the two relevant entries are: "windscreen with green top tint" and "green tinted heat insulating glass". Unsure if this means that I'll need antenna - any ideas? (I'll check with Road Angel guys anyway).

Cheers,
Mike.

I have a Road Angel Compact and it is now virtually redundant. This is because I have a TomTom 700 with 'pocketGPS' camera software on it. Very impressive. Various data files available including one package that differentiates between all types of camera and speed settings, also includes all registered mobile camera locations. You can set up different gongs so you know which is which easily. The pocket GPS site is at www.pocketgpsworld.com The TomTom was £325 from Amazon and the software / data costs £19.00 per annum plus £2.00 one off to join. If you discover a new camera that they do not know about you get a free lifetime subscription. The data base claims to have over 10000 cameras on file.

you will not need an extra antenna in a Boxster, or any Porsche - only the heated windscreens on Fords and Astons, plus the UV reflective ones on Renaults necessitate the extra aerial.

By far the biggest database for cameras is the pocketgps one - this has loads more sites on it than the Snooper one i also use for my Snooper S4 detector. Its annoying soemtimes that it has so many extra sites on, but you only need one of them to actually be there and its saved you ;)

I've been using a road angel plus for a couple of years having upgraded from a morpheus Geodesy. They are reasonably effective and are a good reminder of static sites; however (as you are prbably aware) they won't detect radar guns and I am not convinced the laser detection is particularly useful (by the time a laser is detected your speed is already registered). They level the playing field a little and are a valuable tool but don't rely on them exclusively. I also find the database a little out of date; there is a GATSO site near me that was decommissioned over a year ago and the Road Angel still bleeps like crazy when I drive through it.

I have to say I personally love the Talex system.. Have units in both teh Boxster and the Cayenne ... Although we have the "full" tales we run them in camera mode only (so like a talex Lite) .. If you buy them from Misco you can get a talex unit for the cost of a talex Light.. so we went full Talex..

They get updates every week and are pretty accurate ...
