Gradual Loss of Power

Chris Wilson

New member
2001 986 Boxster S - Full Porsche service history with Major last year - 85,000m. Almost zero oil consumption. No smoke of any sort.

I am experiencing a gradual loss of power (torque) e.g. exciting roundabout engine reluctant to accelerate - kind of bogs down under heavy throttle application. All good above 4000rpm though.

Recently, idle has become 'grumpy' - not really a misfire but unhappy all the same.

Any ideas?

Chris

try removing the connection to the MAF sensor, if this improves things then perhaps this is the problem.

I agree with Ian's recommendation Chris.

Other than that you're probably best running some Porsche-specific diagnostics (PIWIS or similar) to give you a lead. Maybe there's a problem with the variable valve timing control?

Thank you both for the replies

I will try the MAF lead and maybe progress to valve timing

I did think that the symptoms were very like a badly timed engine!

I will let you know

Chris

OK folks

Didn't have time to fix it myself so went to local Porsche specialist and got intake cleaned, throttle body removed and cleaned along with the throttle butterfly. MAF replaced with a new one.

All checked out good on the diagnostic. Idle problem now cured so no more mister grumpy! Unfortunately, I now have a very distinct acceleration flat spot which is related to throttle opening rather than revs. Any time throttle is closed and then opened the engine is reluctant to accelerate then it recovers mostly. A kind of throttle map problem???

As ever, your wisdom appreciated

Chris
