Graunching secod gear when cold

My car seems to dislike this cold weather, especially the gearbox which graunches when changing from first to second unless i take my time or double de-clutch. Once warmed up its fine however. Its also perfectly fine when changing down from third to second when cold.

Could this simply be that the oil is a bit thick? Or even maybe to thin?

Does anyone know which is the best oil to use to cure this problem?

Many thanks,
Stu

Remember that it takes longer to warm the gearbox through as it's a long way from the heat.

Mine was noticably better for an oil change, I've only got G&S's finest but loads of people swear by Swepco - get it from Bert, details in faqs.

Take the filler out before the drain, it's safer than turning the car upside down if you've drained the 'box and then find the filler seized. [8|]

Thanks Paul, il change the oil and see if it helps.

Thinking about it, does the gearbox oil cooler have a thermostat? If not, then surly that would cause it to take more time to get up to temp would it not?

Hi Stu.

My car is exactly the same. Never a problem with the gearbox until Sept or October, but now horrible getting into first or second until things warm up. I called Bert but he's out of Swepco for a while (due to the hideous pound - Euro exchange rate), so I've got my dad to get me some Redline Synthetic MTL for Christmas. :) I fear he's only got 2 litres and I need three, but it's a good start!

Will let you know if it makes any difference when I change it. (Should imagine it would, as I doubt it's been done before and the car's on 75,000 miles odd now).

Cheers,

Giles

Hi fellers, I have owned my 'S' for 7 seven years, this is the first year that I don't have a problem changing gear from 1st to 2nd when cold.

Last year I had to have a replacement engine (ouch) whist the work was being carried out I had a new clutch fitted, the old clutch had a solid rubber type of damper as oppossed to the new one that has the small springs (does that make sense?).

I have put the ease of changing gear this year down to this, anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Andy
