As per the title - I've just bought meself a new toy ! haha

I'll post pics and details later, as I'm off out now for a family meal for my mum.

It's a Zermatt Silver '88 Turbo and I'm quite happy !

Hope you guys are all right about how good they are ? lol

Regards,

Mike

PS - I'm not mad, I just wanted to tell people who would understand the excitement as few of my friends do ! lol

It's the right choice, you won't regret it. I could say spend the weekend driving it like a granny so you get used to it but that would be just dull. Get out there and drive it like you stole it! Within reason of course. Congrats!

Welcome to the asylum[8|][:D][:D]

Now, whatever you do, don't start to modify it....[8|][:D]

A cheaper hobby would be to set fire to your wallet[&o]

But man, is it ever worth it:ROFLMAO:

Thanks guys, nice to have a warm welsome. I've been lurking on here for some time now, and have considered many cars in the last few months. In the end I just couldn't leave this one there for the money :

First Porsche, so still got that warm feeling inside ! haha

As for modifying - it's already got a filter, exhaust, boost enhancer and a chip.

Thinking the chip is pretty naff (need to check which one it is tomorrow) as it seems to be running rich as hell at the moment. Time will tell, I haven't had a chance to start meddling yet . . . . . . . . . [;)] lol

A few problems with the car, but most are just niggly little things that can be fixed with a little time and love. Biggest issue is it seems to be leaking power steering fluid. Haven't had a chance to clean it all up and assess properly - but is there any usual faults / pipes that fracture or wear through etc. ?

Cheers guys, sure I'll have a few questions over the weekend as I get to grips with it and have time to poke around properly.

Mike

Looks nice Mike.

Did you get that from Peak Porsche???

You will have to bring it along one evening when everyone gets together for a chat.

A this rate we may out number the rear engined boys for a change.

Maybe drag it along 13th Aug to the Derby Pool in New Brighton.[:D]

Thanks Lee.

Yeah, been dealing with Andy at Peak Porsche for a good while now. Do you know the car then ?

Will defo be coming along to some meets - be good to learn some faces etc.

Looking at Rennlist (as the search engine on here doesn't seem to work for some reason ?) it looks like PS hoses collapse internally, or split quite regularly due to age etc. looks like I'll be cleaning stuff off tomorrow to see where the problem lies

Mike

Very nice indeed[8D]

I was interested in that car too and at the price drop im not surprised you snapped it up.

Stu

Thanks Stu.

It has it's faults (pretty minor I think) but seems a good honest car for 20 years old.

Time will tell, I'll make her right ! haha

Don't know the car but had seen it advertised and thought it looked nice.

Sure we will see it at some point

Looks like a very nice specimen from the outside - bonne chance mon ami! (forgive me, I live and work in Belgium - the land of a thousand beers, most of which start at 7% ... if in doubt, try my current favourite 'Duvel' (9.5% [:)]) ... indeed, saw it in a Tesco's the other day when I popped back to Blighty with the Panzer).

Now, to try and be of some assistance viz the power steering fluid malarky (obviously you will have checked all pipes/couplings from/to pump/reservoir etc)... I had this with my 944 Lux some two yrs ago and it turned out to be a crack in the steering rack (not uncommon I am told) ... which meant two things - one I lost power steering coming off the ferry at Calais with 300Km to go (interesting - but not fascinating) and, secondly, all the 'spare' hydraulic fluid found its way onto the offside (nearside for me!) disc and caliper and therefore the pads ... limiting my braking efficiency somewhat (fascinating - but not interesting). I hope - of course - this comedy of errors does not befall you ... but it might be worth a check all the same?

If I may be so presumptious (what with me with less than 10 posts) ... welcome to the fold - in NA or turbo form these have to be one of the best driver's cars and very little else corners like them (apart from distant memories of my Triumph GT6 in the 70s and, fair play, that was before I understoood the limitations of understeer and the delights of one's rear wheels 'tucking under'!)

And it gets better . . . . . . . . Just done my insurance . . . . . . . . . . That'll be £134 ! hahahahahahahahahaha

Beginning to love Porsche World guys !

There's a sort of "˜coil' of tubing through which the steering fluid passes to aid cooling. This is the most common point of failure, as it cracks when old. The cooling is totally unnecessary in our climate, so unless you're planning a move to someplace sunnier (and I'm talking California/Nevada sort of heat) then the easiest thing to do is just remove the cooling coil and replace it with a short piece of regular hose.

Just had exactly that done to my old Lux because of a fluid leak and it seems fine.

You haven't got a diagram of the bit you mean have you Poprock ?

I'm just nipping out now for some degreasing solution as there's crap everywhere near the pump and pipes so I need to clean it all off so I can see what I'm looking at. It's one giant leak right now - everywhere ! lol

Soon be a much clearer picture I hope

lucky beggar! [:D][:D][:D]

who are you insured with ?

well done on your purchase. Zermatt silver was the colour of my first Porsche an 86 Lux.
It has to be one of the best colours out there. Always looks fantastic even when dirty.

I'm now on my third 944 An S2 and I can't imagine a time when i shall ever be without one. Just got to buy a Turbo now to see what all the fuss is about lol[;)][:D][:D]

Hagerty Insurance - very helpful and can recommend them. Even got track day cover @ £14 a day if I want it !! Can't be bad.

Well guys, after an hour with degreasing fluid/spray and the garden hose I'm now pretty clean around my power steering pump and all associated hoses etc. Looks like the primary pressure hose which runs from the pump to the rack is at fault. Best place to get one from ? Any idea of cost before I start to look ? How much of a bugger of a job is it gonna be ? lol. Doesn't seem too bad at first glance [8|] haha

At least once that's done I can actually go out and drive her ! She's just sat on the drive looking lovely for now . . . . . . . .

That's a great tip Tony, mine's in the way of the brake ducting and I was wondering how I was going to reposition it.

Congrats on the car Mike, looks great!

This is quite a common one and I know one of my cars had to have this replaced many years ago. It was quite an expensive part (circa £150 for a three foot piece of hose IIRC) so it may be worthwhile contacting your local branch of Pirtek who should be able to send a van round and make you up a hose using the fittings on your old one.

Pirtek - thanks Paul. Couldn't remember the blinkin name ! Been racking my (small) brain all day trying to think of it. I'm stripping them off the car tomorrow and will be doing my damndest to get them re-made this week as opposed to buying new, as it's £150 ish as you say, and I'd like to replace the reservoir to pump one too as the fluid is bubbly and the pump is cavitating, so I fear this has collapsed internally. Re-make should be a much better option.

Good work guys - at this rate I'll make the R5 meet on the 13th July [:)]
