Great driving roads in our area

Hi guys

I have organized a few runs for the 997 lot over the last couple of years in the R19 area and I thought it would be a great idea to start a thread telling people where the best driving roads are. Plus ask if you guys know of any cracking roads in the area.

I am rating the following roads out of 10 (for UK roads, a Swiss pass would equate to 100!) in red on the maps...

This route starts in Aldermaston (although I often start it from OPC Reading on Jn12 of M4) and finishes at the Leatherne Bottel restaurant in Goring:

This next route starts at the Trout Inn in Oxford and ends at the George & Dragon pub in Wargrave:

Note Aston Hill rated as a 9 - we normally do a few loops (turn left at the top) of this hill as it's so much fun!

I should be running the first route with a few 997 pals in a couple of weeks, so I need to find a better loop around Andover somehow.

Any more suggestions??

Hi Alex

The thing about R19 is that it's an odd shape (as I understand it) and I live in the extreme south east of the region. So I don't know the areas of your routes particularly well at all. The good roads that I know proboably fall within R29, R23 and R17. Not that it matters obviously.

If it helps, the A285 Petworth to Chichester Road is excellent, particularly around Duncton. So is the A286 from Milford to Chichester, though there are bottlenecks.

It's not a long road but Bell Hill heading north out of Petersfield is excellent when you get to the uphill twisty section.

Looking further afield I've just completed the recce for the 2010 R19 (Not the) WOTY in Kent and East Sussex. It will include a stretch of road known to some as the Camber-ring. This is a route that runs along the coast from Rye to Camber to Lydd, across the marshes to Appledore and back into Lydd on the epic Military Road. Well worth seeking out, some intense twisties Rye to Camber to Lydd and then proper straights interspersed with tight bends on Military Road.

Cheers

James

Nice one James [:)]

I have mapped the A285 and A286 roads out so easier to visualize:

I might add this to my general discussion thread too if you don't mind

Alex, both your routes look superb, once my alternator fault is fixed, I would love to try those routes, although I will not be able to keep up with you turbo guys !!

James

I hope it's going to be fixed for next month![:)]

Sc0tty - If not you can come with me ...

All you gotta do is meet at my house and we can go from there :) I just need to get my (marginal) brakes sorted prior to the event LOL

Cheers, Si.

Double room OK? [:D]

Seriously, if you do this please let me know because it will mean there's room for an extra car.
