Great start to 2022!

So, how's everyone's 2022 so far? Mine was going well for about 3 hours before, at around 03:00 on the 1st, a drink-driver failed to notice the row of parked cars outside my house with my beloved 987 taking rear guard, and hit her rear offside quarter at a decent click. Insurance company have already declared her a write-off just from the description, which is unsurprising. In the first photo you can see the parking bay white lines, her rear wheels were originally just inside them, handbrake fully applied, in Park, so given where she ended up (about 30cm from the wall of the house), and the fact that the impact "knocked on" to 3 other cars in the row, it was a quite a bump.

Pretty gutted. Sure, it's only a "thing", no one was hurt (though the driver was arrested and likely faces some expensive times ahead), but "things" like this can be difficult to replace. I really liked this car, it had a good feel and my local mechanic reckoned it was a very well-maintained example, so how can I be sure of replacing that? Plus she was in Carmine Red, which is pretty rare.

Hoping everyone else's year is going better.

Jon

Jon

I feel for you. What an absolute t**t! Hope you end up smiling again when you take delivery of the replacement.

Don't settle for low money from the insurance company, go out and find another Boxster that is comparable to yours (milage, condition, options etc) and make them buy that one for you or show them that is what it costs to replace your loss as they will want do give you Clarksons farm for yours if you don't have anything to fight them with.

I am really sorry for your loss.

Hi Allblack, has that approach ever worked for you? Looking at Autotrader, ~£11k - £12k seems to be the price to get a similar model, the very cheapest listed is £10,700 for ANY 987 S, and that's with 98k miles (mine was only at 76k). The closest is probably the third one listed, at £12,995, as it seems to exactly match my spec (apart from the colour). I've not had any dealings with insurance companies in many years, but seem to recall they can come up with absurd values. Has anyone had any recent experience of typical payout vs "realistic" replacement price? Jon

What a complete throbber. I hope he gets locked up and has to spend a spell in the communal showers picking up soap.

Hope you get a new one soon.

Hi Jon,

That's gut-wrenching, so sorry. Not very recent experience, but I've had two total loss insurance claims over the years (one was theft) and in both cases I contested the initial valuation which I felt to be low. I could evidence very full service histories and had photographic evidence of the condition of the cars to support my claim they were both significantly above average. I have to say though that after jumping through a couple of hoops to upload docs etc., I was more than happy with the valuations we agreed in the end. It doesn't pay for the heartbreak and hassle of course. I'd lock the driver up for a very long time, personally.

Good luck with it. Onwards and upwards?

Sorry to hear of your unfortunate Boxster being wrote off by your insurance company & yes the beautiful colour of Carmine Red are extremely rare colours to find & my good Friend Chris who's the owner of Pie Performance Specialist cars company that's based in Suffolk & also has just Sold another beautiful 2007 Carmine Red Porsche Boxster 3.4 S litre model with Beige interior & with just under 67000 miles upon its clock & 6 speed manual transmission as a added bonus for it's pure driving pleasure for the iconic 987 model Boxster that was ever built by Porsche Cars of Stuggart in Germany.

That’s terrible!! I can’t believe people still drink and drive. I hope you get a good settlement from the insurance company.

Hi Jon,

sorry for the late reply, as Gee dog has said above get as much info together as possible to support that your car (pre-collision) was in fantastic shape as well as getting some typical values of cars currently available to buy on the market.

As your insurance should be able to claim from the drunken bums insurance they should try to help you acheive the best possible settlement without argument.

Once again, really sorry for your loss.

Tim

Hi Tim, thanks again (and thanks to all others who've replied so far). I'm hopeful that since there shouldn't be any possibility of doubt about who is at fault here, it should be a case of my insurance trying to get as much as possible from the driver's insurance. I have legal protection as well so that's there if need be. The car has a full Porsche specialist service/maintenance record, MOT'd only a month ago, receipts for all work right back to new, etc.

Really sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident Jon and hope you get a satisfactory outcome from your insurer.

Horse and stable door but for your replacement it will be worth getting a free valuation via the Club … just in case lightning strikes twice! [:(]

Jeff

Oh wow I am gutted for you. I seriously hope they get dealt with by the police. Meanwhile I wish you the very best of luck finding another example. Fingers crossed you get sorted.

How awful, utterly terrible. I do hope you can find a suitable replacement.

Good luck with the insurance company, as others have said gather as much evidence as you can of advertisement etc. Get a report and valuation of your car from whoever maintains it for you. At the risk of shutting stable doors etc, when you come to insure your replacement car, look beyond getting the lowest possible premium and get a policy with an agreed valuation, such as the PCGB Policy with Lockton. Having had to suffer a total loss myself recently it was incredibly reassuring to know throughout that they would pay out exactly what we had agreed my car was worth, and not have the hassle and stress of fighting with them about it. Such a policy might cost a little more, but it’s worth it when you need it.

I feel for you in your pain.

You asked about recent payouts. My daughter's 2017 Focus was written off (by a woman.......) last October. She bought it 1 year old and had added 10,000 miles in 18 months. Insured on an Admiral multi car policy and they offered (without prompting) exactly what she paid for it 18 months previously. No complaints there!

You should hold out for what you think it is worth. Best of luck.

Hi all, so here we are, more than 3 weeks later and still no real progress. Latest news is that she's been deemed a "total loss", which wasn't a great surprise, but there's still no sign of a valuation/offer. I'm becoming increasingly concerned at the prices and availability I'm seeing on Autotrader. This is what I see today, looking for 987S, sat nav & Bose, up to 90k (though mine was only 77k). So there's only ONE 987.1S, and that's £15.7k. I'm thinking I'm going to be left several grand short of anything close to replacing my car.

Does anyone have experience of whether it's possible to pursue a private claim against the driver? I have legal insurance. The only icing on the cake is that they've given me a decent enough replacement car - a 2021 Audi TT TFSI Quattro, which was surprising (I was fully expecting a Nissan Micra with 150k on the clock). It's a nice car, and a pretty good replacement in terms of style, etc., but it's not a Porsche :( Jon

Jon - I’m not sure if this would be of any help. I have a 2007 silver 987 Boxster S 3.4 (manual) that I bought new, with 53k on the clock and a FPSH, with satnav, Bose, leather etc. I’ve been toying with the idea of selling it for a couple of months and reading your post made me think that after 15 years of enjoyable ownership, I’d like it to go somewhere it would be appreciated. If you’d be interested in a conversation, let me know.

All the best, Terry.
