Gremlins in the Starter Motor

Help! My mate has a "93" 964. It drained its brand new battery within 2 weeks. When charged and re-connected the starter motor immediately kicked in (the key was not in the ignition). With the key in the ignition the engine started normally BUT the starter motor stayed engaged! My mate is blaming the starter motor but I tend to think possible short in the ignition barrel. Before he spends money getting somebody to look at the car I was wondering if anybody had experienced similiar or could shed any light????[&:]
