Ever since I've had the car, there has been an awful grinding noise from the rear spoiler (I doubt I'm the only person this has happened to) Was searching ebay last weekend under Porsche 964 like everyone does and I spotted an ad from an ebay shop for a repair kit - only £9.99 inc postage. Given that the spoiler transmission is a sealed unit and costs about £250 from an OPC I was a bit sceptical but thought, just hit the 'buy now' button.
It arrived in yesterday's post and I thought "that's a very expensive small sealed bearing", which it would be for a tenner when you could probably buy one for a quid or two. What was worth the money though was the 4 page printout with photos and full instructions.
The long and short of it is that the sealed bearing replaces a ball race which has a direct path for water to enter and in time, the bearing fails - hence the grinding noise. You do stand a chance of ruining the old unit because you have to perform surgery on it but then you would have to replace it anyway.
I'm not going to give all of the details because that would be unfair on the seller but if anybody with a 964 or 993 has this problem, I'll be happy to let them have the seller's details.
