Grinding noise

hi, have had a grinding noise coming from somewhere which is sending a vibration through the car. If I lay my fingers on the handbrake lightly, I can feel a vibration. Mind you I got the same response placing my fingers on the dashboard.
i have renewed both rear tyres, I have replaced front brake pads and brake discs. I have checked rear pads and discs and I have wire brushed and sanded the inside of the rear discs as sometimes they can corrode. I have also bled the brakes just in case. Not a full flush but just a simple bleed, rear brakes first and then front brakes.
the caliper pots seem to push back in flush with little effort, is just using pliers. Because they pushed in easy, I thought I could disregard rusty pots etc. Only thing I noticed was that the pots don't all seem to move together, is this correct?
people tell me it doesn't sound like a wheel bearing but I cant see anything rubbing.
noise does not occur when car is running stationary, it only occurs when the car is moving.
any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
thanks

How many miles has the car covered?. Also have you had any pot hole trips? I take it that they balanced the new rears. Any thing you drove over checking the treads has it just started that bad or slowly been getting worse. I've recently had my wheels refurbished and I didn't know but they had to straighten one of my wheels. The mileage if high could be a wheel bearing or perhaps the rear drive shafts. Is it also two wheel or four wheel drive if four maybe rubber coupling to the front transfer box. I'll shut up now and good luck. It's a carrera 2 so no front transfer box

Hi, it has done 117k and the noise was there before I replaced the wheels and the front brake discs/pads. My gut feeling is that it is a wheel bearing but can't get any movement on the wheel myself when I try to twist it. I think I will need to take it to a garage to test it but again my gut feeling is the rear nearside wheel bearing. Don't have the tools to do this job so it will need to go into the garage anyway. Quite capable of doing caliper refurbished, brake pads and brake discs as no specialist tools required. It's been annoying me now for weeks. However, what happens to the rear drive shaft? Is there anything I can do to check this area?

Take a left hand bend at speed, if the grinding gets louder then it's likely to be a bearing on the RHS and vice versa. If the grinding doesn't get louder when you take a hard turn then I think it's likely to be something else.

Thanks Rodney, have done this to some degree to try and determine which side and although there might be some difference I think I need to do it as you say, with some speed and on a tighter bend. Will do this tomorrow and see if I notice a significant difference or not, thanks

Grinding noise does sound like a wheel bearing, or possibly a disc plate - If you eliminate those, might be worth a geometry check.

Just got car back from mot and the guy says rear near side wheel bearing, just as I thought as I had eliminated everything else.
To cut costs down I was thinking of removing the whole unit myself and then paying a garage to extract and replace the bearing and then me fitting the whole unit back in place.
Anyone point me to any videos on how to do this and how easy is it to do. I have 14 days to complete for my free retest,
thanks

is the job easy enough Richard for a diy person? Was thinking of taking the whole unit out and take to a garage to extract the bearing and fit in the new one. This would I think significantly reduce costs. Been quoted £330 by an indie!
many thanks,
david

thanks everyone for your comments and Richard for the instruction sheet. after consulting a number of garages and reading the instruction sheet I decided this job was far too big and took it to an indie. it was the wheel bearing which cost £320 to do. garage said that unless you know what your doing a wheel bearing should be left to the experts. apparently the bearing needs to go in the right way around as the bearing has a magnet inside it which is picked up by the ABS system. another reason is that it sits in an aluminium housing which if oppressed in incorrectly will knacker the whole unit. anyway, back on the road. thanks all
