Grinding/Rattle from the front of my 996

Hi guys,

Wondered if anyone has had similar or know what this could potentially being caused by... I have a 1999 996 Tiptronic C4 and just in the last few days have noticed a grinding
attling noise that comes from the front of the car (you can feel a slight vibration in the steering wheel). It seems to be intermittent, but more noticeable when the car is warm. Its doesn't seem to be related to acceleration or braking it just happens whatever the conditions... So no trend unfortuately. I've only had the car for a couple of months and it's my first Porsche, so still trying to learn some of the mechanical aspects of the car. Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated. All the best. Steve

Is it speed related? Could be something as simple as a trapped stone rubbing on a disk, or as complicated as a problem with the front differential. Possibly a driveshaft joint? If it was me, I would take the front wheels off and look for something obvious, and if I couldn't find anything get professional help.

Sounds like the creaking front suspension bush? Common fault, not too expensive. Most noticeable at lower speed, when warm (never understood why). Eventually mine got so bad I could recreate it by pressing down on the wing to work the suspension.

Regards
Neil

i had something similar. i ended up replacing front top mounts . it was more noisy going over sleeping coppers ! not a big job.

Sorry, maybe I interpreted "grinding/rattle" as drive train related, rather than the typical "creaking/groaning" of the suspension arms, or the "clonking" of anti-roll bar drop links.

Someone ought to have a noise database we could use to distinguish the different sounds.

Thanks for your input guys, much appreciated. Was abit concerned when I have only had the car for such a short period of time. I have since spoke to a helpful guy a JAZ (Wembley), where the car was last serviced and was pretty sure it could be the front control arms (common problem). It's not to bad at the moment as its intermitent and not a constant noise. I guess it will get worse the more it's used. It doesnt matter where i'm going fast or slow or over dodgy road. Definitely happens when the car has been used for 20 minutes and at normal operating temperature. Will take it in when I get a chance. Looks like it will be under limited use for now and the old chavlier can be used for work. Will it have serious implications if I continue to use the car (my Porsche that is!!)?

Cheers guys.
Steve

If it's a control arm then it will only continue to get worse and drive you mad! It won't do any damage if you leave it for a while before getting it repaired.
