Groaning Noise on Start-up

Hi

I've an '89 944 cab and just after the engine starts-up there is a groaning noise that then dies away. It's at the time when the starter has just kicked over the engine. Does anyone know what this could be (?? starter related) ? The engine starts just fine..so hoping it's not serious.

Thanks for helping

Rich

Its probably the car saying "oh no, here we go again, I`m in for another damn good thrashing"

[:D][:D]

Can't be the wife, he said the noise died away [:D][:D][:D][:D]

Not unless he leaves on the drive!!!!

Just running for cover now

What sort of groaning? If it sounds a bit like a dying 'Moooooooooooo', it could be the oil pressure release valve. Usually happens when the engine has been running for a while at high revs and is allowed to come down to low revs (coming off a motorway, for instance), but could also happen on start-up, I guess.

If so, nothing to worry about. It will probably go away next time the oil is changed.

Oli.

ORIGINAL: xenon

ABS pre-charge pump.
That would be my guess, sometimes I forget the car does this, I am sure my 968 does the same and its always a little surprise if I haven't driven the car for awhile.

Would be my guess too - if it occurs just as you pull away as opposed to a finite time after the engine starts.

Otherwise I'd guess its a noisy starter drive pawl bearing - if it occurs just as the engine kicks into life, the starter pawl gets kicked out from the flywheel ring-gear, and the starter spools down. This should be over very quickly after the engine starts.

ABS pre-charge pump.

Car has to start moving first for the ABS to check itself.

Rich said it is immediately after the starter is engaged and could be a sticking starter bendix however..........does the noise (sounds like a coffee grinder) come from the r/h side of the drivers footwell, if it does then its the ABS system check which should only operate as you start moving.

Thanks for all the useful suggestions - Have determined the following ..

1. It's not the wife - although if she knew what the suspension refresh really cost she might well groan....
2. ABS was ok
3. I thought Porsches were built to thrash - so it can't complain, surely..

Turned out to be the starter motor not disengaging.

Seriously thanks all for your help

Rich
