GT-R arrives

I'm not a heretic, honest! Just passing the Nissan dealer today and stunned to see a forecourt full of GT-Rs...all ordered, apparently, so they must have shipped a boat load.

Naturally I stopped and had a chat...looks good in pearlescent white. nice to see it up close. I was in the family barge (SAAB) but confessed my Porsche interest. They didn't offer a test drive, so I picked up a price list....yours for £56.8k!!

That'll take a while to depreciate down to 944 prices...

I don't know actually, in a mad way I have always fancied the older GT-R's but its notable just how well the R34 has hung onto its value, sure R32's now cost about the same as our cars though. It will be interesting to see how many they sell, that will really effect things as rather perversely the more popular a car is when new, the cheaper they are secondhand.

A couple of these turned up at the recent Supercar Show at Gaydon. They look absolutely massive - the tall sides just seem to make it carry alot of percieved weight. Still, gotta respect the job Nissan have done.

An R32 GTR worth having is still £7k, you can pick them up cheaper but they usually will need something doing/money spent. Most 944's aren't £7k but to be fair the GTRs are the range toppers and you can pick up a bread and butter Skyline for shrapnel..

I have seen a few out here and on the track. They do move pretty well straight out of the box although I've seen them look a little bit 'skittish' at times. Perhaps that's all the electronics doing their thing? I had a few laps on track behind one a few weeks ago. They have plenty of punch out of the corners that's for sure.

Up close in the pits I quite liked the looks and inside was very much like an 'X-Wing' fighter from Star Wars. [:D]

I agree, there was one parked alongside my car before we went onto the test track and it looked like an MPV [&:] The owner had spent 10K just fitting some better brakes... Certainly did have some poke though, but it really does nothing for me (unlike the older ones which have a certain brutish charm).

They do look like a tasty bit of kit on the face of it - though now they are getting some use some issues are starting to seep to the surface. The £56k price tag sounds cheap on the face of it but if you intend to use the car's performance, especially its launch control then you'd best factor in the cost of a few new gearbox's. All of a sudden it's not looking such a bargain. No point in spending half the cost of a 997 turbo on a car which is as quick as a 997 turbo if you can't actually use that performance. With such an expensive weakness I can't see the car holding its value - especially when you see how quickly 997 turbo's are depreciating - and Porsche will warrant those irrespective of how you drive them.

But that is just not the case Scott. A couple of very vocal Americans with JDM imports have abused their GTR's habitually using the LC (iirc one used it 70 times in two weeks) then wondered why Nissan North America wouldn't replace their gearboxes so they went on a libelous campaign on the internet instead. Had they broken un-abused USDM examples then maybe they would have an axe to grind against Nissan North America.

Regarding Porsche honouring warranty claims irrespective of how you drive them, "Asbo" is taken one OPC to court for not honouring the warranty and I also know Guy Radcliffe had his warranty claim refused for defective PCCB brakes on his GT2. I believe there was a piece in EVO some years ago because Porsche & BMW wouldn't honour warranties on cars used on track (including CSL's & GT3 RS's).

Regarding the R35 vs 997 depreciation, if you look at the R34 GTR vs 996TT you'll see they are worth similar monies for similar age/milage and I can't see why the new generation would be different.

OK maybe I used the term 'irrespective of how you drive your car ' a bit loosely. Of course they wont warrant against anything that happens on track, these are road cars afterall, but Porsche have said they'll warrant their PDK boxes against failures as a result of using the launch control. Nissan wont, so in my mind it is basically saying - don't use the launch control, and don't use the cars full accellaration potential from standstill as the box might not take it and you'll be looking at a hefty bill.
