GT3 Mk1 - Coolant System

Can someone tell me where the temperature gauge sensors is loacted, is it before the thermostat or after it, had the car overheat the other day, well the temperature gauge moved slightly above normal but steam coming from the filler bottle? The local PC has had a look at it and they say the thermostat is not fully opening to allow the coolant to flow to the rads - i would have thought that the temperature sensor would be on the engine so that if the thermosat did not open you would get some indication on the gauge.

 
The sensor is tucked behind the alternator, near the heat exchanger.

Could it be the coolant tank cap itself? If the part number ends with 00, then it is worth changing anyway.
